"Omg hey! Pazzy!"
Topaz turned around with a grimace. One of her mom's friend's, Diana, was across the street, waving crazily. Topaz looked around as if she didn't know who Diana was talking to. Diana ran across the street and hugged Topaz.
"Your hair! It's pink and you cut it?"
"Yeah..."
"I liked it before."
Topaz glared at her, " Well... I'm not twelve anymore."
Diana gave that, "Well ok bitch," face.
"Tell your mother I said hi."
"Can do."
Topaz continued on her way. She was headed to a social gathering her school was having for the sophomores. She didn't really want to go, but her mom insisted. Her mother had said it would be a great way to make new friends, even though her friends were perfectly fine.
Topaz arrived at a building the size of a church. She pushed open the double doors. Everyone stopped and looked, then continued on with their conversations. She quickly pulled out her phone and texted her best friend, Zechariah. She stood against a wall and waited.
"Guess who?"
"A pubescent twelve year old?" Topaz smirked as she turned around.
Zechariah looked at her, not amused.
"Nice hair."
"Thanks. I was trying something new."
"And your mom, has she seen your hair?"
Topaz giggled and shook her head. She had recently got her hair done that day. Her mother said she wouldn't pay money to get Topaz's hair done like that, so Topaz saved up the money herself.
"I really don't care what my mom thinks. I'm sixteen and can drive, I'm pretty much an adult."
"Yeah sure."
There was a loud noise that quieted everyone. A girl with long hair that was braided stepped on a table and spoke loudly
"Alright. Everyone who's sitting around, being lame... go mingle! This is a social gathering, be social, but not too social. Yeah I see you two back there..."
Zechariah and Topaz stared at each other.
"Don't leave me..." She whispered
"Sorry... before you got here, I saw the hottest girl."
"Ugh, can you not be a boy for five seconds?"
Zechariah turned to leave," It's not that hard to talk to new people."
Topaz stood there alone. She slid to the floor and covered her face with her knees.
"Sup. You alright?"
Topaz looked up, the girl with the braid was standing over her smiling. At that moment, something fluttered in Topaz.
"Hello..?" The girl said waving her hand in front of Topaz.
"Wha- sorry. I'm Topaz..." she spoke softly.
"Valeria, but I prefer Val."
Topaz stood up and shook her hand.
"Do you live around here?"
"Ya. Just a few blocks from here."
"Cool. I feel like I've seen you around before."
"We go to the same school..."
"Yeah! We do."
They both sat in silence for a minute.
"Hey why don't you come join the circle. We're all saying something interesting about ourselves."
Topaz shrugged and followed Val into a room where a few kids were chatting and sitting in a circle. In the corner she saw Zechariah flirting it up with a blondie. Topaz sat at the outer edge of the circle, so no one would notice her. Kids around the circle began to introduce themselves.
"Hey, I'm Valeria, most people call me Val and I spend my free time swimming."
"Hi I'm-"
Val interrupted the girl speaking.
"Hey! Topaz why don't you introduce yourself."
Everyone looked at Topaz. She froze hoping she'd camouflage with the background. She took a deep breath.
"Hi...um I'm Topaz an-and I like to draw sometimes.."
The room was quiet until someone burst into the room.
"Pizza's here!"
Everyone scurried out of the room, pushing and shoving each other. Topaz slowly stood up.
"Hey. Where ya going?" Val said grabbing her shoulder.
"Home! I'm going home. This was a stupid idea..." Topaz turned to leave.
"I didn't think it was a stupid idea. Here," Val handed her a slip of paper." We should hang sometime."
Topaz accepted the paper and left.
Topaz walked up the steps to the front door.
"Topaz! What is that mess in you hair!"
Oh I forgot...

RomanceTopaz hopped into Zechariah's car. He gave her a smug look. "What?" She said. "Nothing." "Yeah I think she's pretty. Whatever." "I was just going to say I got that blonde girl's number." Topaz frowned looking out the window and blushed. "Whatever."
