"Past's Secrets"

Bad day

Hey guys! My name is karrie. Im 17 and love watt pad!! So this is my first story. I just happened to be writing a short story for school and decided to make it longer and add more events to make it a story :) I hope that you guys like it. So here it goes!!

Chapter 1- Bad day

Sitting in my apartment on a warm Tuesday morning. Waiting for my coffee to finish dripping in my cup. Realizing the time I got up grabbed my coffee and headed down the hall to my room. I turned the corner and saw my brother's room door open. As I walked over to his door, I knew he wasn't in there.

Being a firefighter has you up and at them before the sun even awakes. I walked in and scanned the room, I saw the picture of mom and dad sitting on his desk and walked over to it. I ran my fingers over the glass and felt the hot tears brimming in my eyes. "Oh momma daddy, how I miss you.. Why did you have to leave me?" I sat down on Luke's bed and tried to recall what the man had told me. Something like "Ariel I'm So sorry but mommy and daddy arn't going to be able to come home. Not ever.I smiled at the thought of Luke being such a wonderful big brother. He came around the corner that day and just held me. He told me. Ariel, mom and dad can't be here for you, but know I will always be here if you need someone. "I don't know what I would do without him".

I decided to go take a shower before leaving for work. I started back down the hall to my bedroom when I remembered Luke's one and only pet peeve. "Ariel how many times do I have to tell you to shut my door if you go into my room?!" I chuckled thinking about it. My dear brother, oh he meant everything to me. I don't know what I would do if I had to go through life without him. I can't even imagine what life would be like if he wasn't by my side helping me through every step of the way. Having a job as a firefighter doesn't help the matter any either. He has kept me in suspense for the past seven years, everyday I just hope and pray he doesn't get caught in a fire, he might not be be able to get out. I shuddered at the very thought of Luke being caught in a burning home and not being able to get out.

"My word!" I yelled. "Just look where all my thinking gets me. I walked down the hall into my room and took a shower. I just finished brushing my teeth when I started to smell something funny. I walked into the kitchen and realized I was burning my toast. I had forgotten all about it this morning. I ran over to the toaster and flipped the switch. " if I'm not careful Luke is going to be rescuing me and the rest of my neighbors from a fire!"I looked at the black piece of toast. "Well I guess it's still edible I grabbed a plate and buttered my Burnt toast. The moment I sat down I glanced at the clock. "9:45! I'm going to be late again! This is the third time this week." I ran down the hall and snatched my purse off my dresser. I sprinted into the kitchen and ripped my keys off the hook. With barely enough time to get out the door I shut it and took off running to my car. The very second I laid my hand on the door handle of my car, I remembered I left the straightener on. I booked it to my apartment door and was looking for my keys in the process. I fell to the floor in utter disarray. Not only could I not find my keys but I burnt my toast, I'm going to be late and now I can't even get into my own apartment. I sobbed for what felt like 5 hours. "Why does this have to happen to me?" I sobbed louder and harder. I knew the reason my head wasn't on straight these past few days, the anniversary of mom and dad's death was right around the corner. I definitely needed Luke.

When, I was finally able to control my sobbing I called Luke.

"Hello it's Luke"

"Umm Luke, I locked my keys in the house and left the straighter on and I can't get in, is there any way you can leave and come rescue me?" "I'm pretty sure that I just heard you chuckle, is that a yes?"

"Yes Ariel, I can come rescue you, only if you promise me you'll make your famous chocolate chip cookies."

"Okay Luke deal, just hurry I'm already an hour late for work"

"An hour Ariel?!" "What's the date?"

"umm May 15." "Why?"

"Ariel be right there, don't move!"

I ended my call with Luke and knew right away he too had just remembered it was mom and dad's death anniversary in just two days. I waited for 10 minutes before I heard the familiar roar of Luke's ford truck. I waited another two minutes before I seen him sprinting down the walk to where I was sitting on the floor in front of our apartment. When he got to me I was already standing. I threw my arms around him and he just held me like he does every year around this time. I cried deeply and just clung to him. I knew Luke too had been crying by the sound in his voice. He whispered something in my ear that made me laugh. No way did I want to burn our whole complex down so we decided to go turn the straightener off then finish talking. I watched him take the keys out of his pocket and open the door. I took off down the hall and walked into the bathroom. "Perfect timing." I pulled the plug and walked out.

When I walked into the living room Luke was on the house phone with a puzzled look on his face. All he kept saying was "I'm sorry sir, but I don't remember." I looked at him with the same puzzled expression. He just gave me a shrug and continued talking. He talked on the phone for a good ten minutes then ended with. "I'll definitely be sure to talk with her sir." He ended the call and told me to have a seat at the kitchen table. I walked over to him and said. "What's wrong Luke?" He looked at me kinda weird then put his head down. He said he would explain it when he gathered his thoughts. I sat down and waited while he kept his head down. For what seemed like ages he sat that way. Finally he picked his head up and said. "Do you know a Mr. Lakewood?"

I looked at him puzzled, as shook my head I started to say something when the phone rang again. This time I answered it.

"Hello Claden residence." "This is Ariel speaking." The voice on the other end startled me. It was a man, just don't get why he's calling here.

"Ah Ariel." "Just the person I was looking for." So have you talked with your brother Luke?"

"Umm actually no sir I haven't, if this is the same person that was just on the phone with him that is."

"Yes, yes it is." "Please call me Berlin, Berlin Lakewood" I will give you until May 20th to call me back, if I don't get a call back I will just come and find you." "Understand?"

I shuddered at this mans voice, for some reason it was cold and creepy. I answered back knowing what was good for me. "Yyyes sir." I stumbled, but before you go, what is it you need from us?" I heard the very annoying ringing in my ear of a dead line. I turned and looked at Luke and he just stared past me. Looking at something behind me? I walked over to where he was sitting and asked him what the man had told him. "Luke?" He wasn't answering. It was like he was lost in another dimension "Luke!" I yelled "Answer me!" "He turned and looked at me. "What did you need to talk to me about?" He wouldn't make eye contact with me. "Luke!" "You are Making me very upset." "Tell me!"

he told me that this man 'Mr. Lakewood wanted to meet with us and wanted us to meet him somewhere out of town. He said the man would explain it to us when we got there. "So this weekend I asked?" Luke told me that it was this weekend this man needed to meet with us. " Luke what are we supposed to do if something happens to us?!" "What if we get kid napped or something?" "Then what huh?" He told me to calm down and that we would figure it out together.

I took off towards my room and jumped on my bed I grabbed my iPad off my dresser and went to face time. "Yes I had a best friend I wanted to tell." "Oh how Kate would love to know about this." Before I could even push call Luke came barging through my room and snatched my iPad out of my hands. "What did you do that for?!" "Well, I wonder who you were about to get on facetime with? I suppose that answers your question then" "Oh by the way Ariel I have your phone too, so don't think about even trying to pull one up on me." " well I am headed back to work" don't leave the house!" "Yes sir!" i mocked him. "Ariel!" "Luke!" I retorted. He just smiled and waved my phone and iPad in the air. "Oh yeah I'm taking these with me"
