"Wake up, Nina, that alarm has been going off for hours," my mother's voice is my wake up call and not the ear bleeding sound of my alarm that I have been aware of for the past hour.
She walks in my room, the sound of her stiletto heels coming to a halt as she opens the curtains. Sunlight from my gigantic balcony windows immediately covers the entirety of my room.
I throw my pillows over my head and try to shut out the blinding light, "Noooooo, please mother," I beg with my voice still raspy from my long sleep.
"Come on honey, it's 1 pm on a Saturday, why on Earth are you still asleep?" She asks, but I've already answered that question too many times this summer and now there's only one week left of this break before senior year starts.
"Mom, it's my summer break and I like to enjoy the sleep I get, without waking up every day at 7 in the morning. Please, another hour ?" I muster up a smile and a pouty face in hopes that she'll agree and leave so I can sleep peacefully again.
She laughs and says "It's hard to say no to that face, but you still have to get dressed, we're having visitors over." Huh?
I'm curious now, "Do I know these visitors ?"
"No, not exactly. You know your father has been looking for new business partners to invest money in expanding the club," I nod, I've known for a while that my dad wants to expand our family's country club, that in my opinion is already enormous.
I think to myself as my mother continues, "Well he's just reconnected with one of his old friends that is interested in doing business with him.......But the problem is that this friend and his family live in Italy, so obviously they can't get much done like that.."
I interrupt and continue for her "So they're going to come to Miami today, right?" She nods.
Anxiously she says, "Yes that's correct, but they will also be staying with us for a week at the most." Visitors ? I laugh and my mother's faced is now filled with confusion.
"Why are you afraid to tell me ?" I asked and I think I knew the answer.
"Because Nina, last time we hosted guests, well they were....... how should I say this..... Ummm..... They were total prats," she says, thickening her British accent and I immediately laugh with her following. I love it when she uses her British insults and still tries to act like a lady. Unfortunately, my accent isn't as polished as hers. It's mostly American, but nonetheless, I've picked up a couple of British words and phrases growing up and still say them to this day.
Going back to the prat guests....They were an absolute nightmare. They were a family of seven, the parents, a set of 5-year-old girl triplets, and a pair of 8-year-old of boy twins. The mother didn't seem slightly bothered by her Tarzan-like children, but that's because they were perfect angels in front of her, but in hindsight; absolute demons. That was the week I'd decided to have only 1 child in the future.
I sigh in defeat, "Fine, I'll get dressed and meet you downstairs."
My mother beams, " Perfect! I'll have breakfast ready for you." She walks over to my bed and leans to kiss my forehead then leaves my room.
This is going to be a long day.
