Have you ever heard the phrase, "Everything happens for a reason"?

I took in a deep breath of the fresh spring air and ran a hand through the grass at my knees. I tugged lightly at the blades in hopes of pulling them out to their roots.

I don't know exactly why it took me so long to finally realize it.

Maybe it was because I was uneducated? Or perhaps because I was simply ignorant? Or maybe, just maybe, it was because of my absence in heaven. My two year absence from the central nervous system of our modern universe.

I lifted my gaze to look at the open field before me. Rabbits and squirrels hopped around in the grass together, some even basking in the sunlight. If it weren't for the situation I was in right now, this scenery would have been peaceful to me. But I was too numb at this point to feel that peace.

I felt the feathers on my back twitch in the sense of danger.

Turning my head to look into the trees beyond the field, I opened my wings just slightly for the sake of protection against any predators. The one in danger wasn't me though.

A brown eyed fox was beginning to corner in on an unsuspecting rabbit. I watched with a feeling of numbness as it neared closer to its next victim.

I sat still and emotionless as I watched the king's pawns closed in on each other. I knew what was about to happen, and I knew that I couldn't stop it.

The fox didn't hesitate a moment longer and pounced on the rabbit and mercilessly bit into its neck. After pulling its teeth out of the rabbits' neck, he tore into its flesh and gnawed away at the bone in its neck. I watched every second of the show being put on before me.

My eyes filled with water and I felt a single tear roll down my left cheek. I didn't know exactly why I was crying though. I was still sat there numb and emotionless, but for some reason a tear had raced down my cheek.

Everything happens for a reason.

I wasn't too different from that rabbit. In fact, I shared more similarities with that dead rabbit than I did with the other angels in heaven. We were both simply pawns in the king's hands. Neither of us controlled our fate. Only the king.

Everything happens for a reason. And that's exactly why all six of us had crossed paths. Because we were all simply pawns at the dispense of the king's choice. And the king just so happened to decide that we were meant to cross paths. Our only choice was to follow the king's every wish. And look where his choices has gotten us.

The rabbit lay limp on the ground, already dead and bathed in its own blood. The fox walked away pridefully, the red stain of blood still lingering on it's white patch of fur. My once strong wings felt as if they began to melt off of my back as they lowered to the ground in defeat as a feeling of helplessness washed over me. I could do nothing but watch as the pawn was killed.

I used to wonder why we had all met and encountered each other. I now know that no matter what we chose to do, we had no say in the situation. We were forced by the king to cross paths and ruin our own lives.

But of course, everything happens for a reason.
