Backstory: Des and her mom, Ella, had came to New York for a big basketball championship. Since Destiny's dad was a marine, he was in Florida. So, it was just her and her mom. It was late and her mom was working while Des was walking home. While walking, she saw a glowing green light over in an alley. After making sure it was safe, she went over to it and saw it was a mutagen canister. She didn't know how dangerous it was, she just thought it was cool and took it with her. The Kraang took her and she ran, eventually getting tired. Luckily, the turtles came and took care of the Kraang quite quickly. Conversation developed when they asked her about the mutagen canister she was holding. Since she now knows the turtles, Shredder threatened to kill Des' parents unless they turned her in. The turtles didn't and Shredder captured her mom, the turtles far too late to save her. When Joshua, Destiny's dad, heard about the news, he came to NYC. Big mistake, for he was captured and killed as well.
