It has only been about three months since I moved in with my father. Saying I moved in with him sounds better than it actually was considering I was forced to live with him. It all started when my mother and father split up, if you've been through the experience of having a broken family then you'd know how hard it is for a child. I'm not sure what I wanted; maybe more attention, or to get my parents back together. Of course, things turned out the opposite of what I had planned. The moment my father showed up at the police station I knew something was up. He gave me no time to pack, he honestly just told me to get in the car. The next thing you know I'm thousands of miles away from my mother, living with my father, his annoying girlfriend, and fourteen other children that are my siblings. For the next three months, I did everything I was told, not by choice, at first. Mostly every day at my father's consisted of eating healthy, private school, exercise, chores, awkward family dinners, and homework. I did what I was told, every day hoping that if I spoke politely and got outstanding grades, then I would be able to go back home and live with my mother. Obviously, that plan hasn't been going as well as I hoped it would. That brings us to today, the present, me, my messed up family, and my dream of leaving this lonely place that I'm supposed to call home. When I woke up this morning, it was a beautiful day in New York City; the sun shined brightly through my bedroom window, birds were chirping, and my nanny, Marie, snuck in McDonald's for my breakfast. I have always been a morning person, so once I got dressed for school and pretended to eat some fruit at breakfast, I was completely ready for my day to get started. Everything went perfectly well throughout most of the day; no one talked to me at school, unless they were making a rude comment about me, and I did really well on my chemistry test. I was sitting quietly in my last class of the day, listening to my teacher, Mrs. Jones, give us instructions on what we could do to earn some extra credit when I heard the door creak open. Everyone turned their heads to the back of the room, except for me. I figured it was just a student late for class, but I was shocked when I heard a familiar voice speak.
"Excuse me," Leonardo, my father's security guy said. I quickly turned around to look, instantly panic rushed over my body. I'm in trouble, or what if my father found out Marie had given me McDonald's? "I need Miss Addisyn to come with me," Leonardo announced. Mrs. Jones nodded and signaled me to leave with her hand before continuing on talking. Everyone watched me as I grabbed my bag and walked out of the room. Leonardo guided me outside, walking quite fast as he did so. I did not speak the entire time, mainly because there was nothing to say. I sat silently in the back of the usual classic black suburban as Leonardo sat in the front with the driver. When we pulled up in front of my father's home, I took my time getting out of the car. "Good luck," Leonardo said as I shut the car door. I watched as the suburban drive away before walking up the grand stairs where Marie was waiting for me.
"Am I in trouble? Are you?" I asked her quickly. Marie shook her head no, her long brown hair nearly hit me as she did so.
"Your father is waiting in his office for you," she told me. Like any normal person, I took my time walking to my father's office. We weren't usually allowed in his office unless we were having a serious talk, and I've never been taken out of school before by my father. I stood in front of his office door for a moment and peeked in. My father sat in his overly large chair typing away on his apple laptop; he wore a black suit and tie as usual and his hair was slicked back with hair gel. As I knocked softly on his door he looked up and shut his laptop.
"You may enter," he told me. I awkwardly stepped in his room and he watched me as I sat down in one of the chairs in front of his desk. This probably wasn't the time to whine, but the chair I sat in was the most uncomfortable thing I have ever sat on in my life. My father seemed to do everything perfect and classy, but at the same time, I was intimidated as he leaned against his desk and stared down at me. "I have a job offer for you," he finally said, breaking the silence. "The man asked me for one of your sisters to do it, but I thought I'd give you the chance," he added. He smiled down at me, but it didn't feel like a true smile, it felt forced and fake.
"Why would I help you or anyone?" I questioned. My father shrugged and rubbed his hands together as if he was thinking about what to say.
"I thought I would give you the chance to do some work, earn some money. This guy is offering ten grand if you do the job, and you'd come to California with me for the weekend. Doesn't that sound nice, getting out of here for a few days and making money? You'd also have unlimited access to my bank account so you could buy anything you wanted, I know your sisters are obsessed with California fashion." My father shrugged once more before saying "I thought maybe you'd like the opportunity, but if not, I can ask someone more willing." It didn't take long for me to know what my answer was, who could turn down this amazing opportunity to go to California? Even if I hated my father and didn't want to do anything for him, how could I say no to earning ten thousand dollars? Plus, I've never been to California, or any place other than the boondocks and New York, and I've always wanted to see the world. I nodded slightly and my father clapped his hands together. "So it's settled, you're coming to California with me tonight!" this time when he smiled, for a second, it looked real.
"What's my job?" I asked, realizing I didn't know what I just agreed to.
"One of the major Disney managers has been told there may be a small strike among some Disney people. There's also rules stating what someone on Disney can and cannot do, and he believes that there may be people breaking the rules. He wants you to try to get some information and report back to him on what you find," my father explained to me.
