A/N: Hello everyone! Welcome to Evan and Zoe Forever, a collection of Dear Evan Hansen one shots I am writing! This first one shot, "The (Almost) Prom", is taking a little longer to write than I expected, so I decided to break it into parts! Don't worry, this part mainly sets up the one shot, the real EvanxZoe stuff is coming, I promise. Anyways, I hope you enjoy part one of "The (Almost) Prom", and this book!

"Evan, are you ready for the," Heidi paused as she opened Evan's door, her excitement suddenly disappearing as she looked at Evan, who was sprawled out in his bed. Slowly, she walked over to his bedside, and looked down at his pained face.

"Mom," he groaned, "I think I have a fever." Evan looked into his mother's sad eyes without saying another word. What a son I am, he thought to himself.

"Evan," Heidi paused, and put her hand on his forehead. Evan flinched at the contact, but then fought to stay still as his mother gently thumbed a few loose strands of his hair. "It's your senior year. You've missed your freshman, sophomore, and junior dance. And plus, this is the big homecoming dance. You'll have a lot of fun! I know you will," she exclaimed, hoping that he would change his mind. No luck. "I want to believe you but you've developed the same fever at the same time for the past three years. Do you want me to call Dr. Sherman? Maybe you two can talk this out." She continued to play with the loose strands of hair.

Evan began to nervously rack his brain for ideas. There was no way he was going to that dance. He continued to play out solutions in his head, realizing there was only one that would work, besides going to the dance. "Um, what if I went to a friend's house?"

Heidi didn't respond. She didn't know how to. It wasn't the dance, but it was a friend. A (hopefully) real friend. "I'm sure they're all going to the dance, Evan. Trust me, you'd really like it."

"But what if I call my friends and see if any of them are available?" Heidi sighed as she looked at her son's face, his eyes sparkling with hope.

"Here," Heidi said as she handed him his phone. She couldn't help but smile as she watched her son grin with joy. "I'll be back to check on you in a few minutes, okay?" He nods, and lets the phone light up his face. Evan scrolled through his contact list, filled with relatives, project partners, and people Heidi made him put in there because "you two would be great friends".

"Oh no. Nooooo," Evan whined to himself after stumbling upon a contact. Reluctantly, he pressed on the number, and the phone began ringing. He clenched his teeth when the ringing stopped.

"Hello?"

"U-um..."

"Evan Hansen!"

"J-Jared Kleinman," Evan said trying to match Jared's enthusiasm, which caused Jared to let out a small laugh. "Um, are you going to the dance?"

"Are you?"

"No."

"Oh. Well don't expect me to go as your date," Jared laughed loudly, making Evan remove the phone from his ear until he stopped. "Um, did you ask Zoe?"

"What?"

"Did you ask Zoe? Is Zoe Murphy going to the dance?"
