Chapter 6: Binghamton High School

Start from the beginning

"Watch yourself," a guy put his hand around her shoulder, and they finally left. "Fucking emo kids, I swear." I heard him say, having no idea what that meant.

I moved closer to the walls and let everyone past me. Leaning against the wall, I thought about what had just happened. I was so embarrassed. Moments like this, I had to turn the music off just to focus. I wanted to run away already. I put the headphones in my pocket with my phone.

"Hey."

I whipped my head towards the voice with wide eyes. It wasn't the same girl. This time, it was two girls. There was one girl with down syndrome. Her hair was tied back, and she wore a bright blue skirt with a yellow blouse. In front of her stood a redhead. Her hair reminded me of the burnt orange sunset over Camra Bay, it was warm, and it tumbled over her shoulders like rusty water. She had blue eyes, and a fair, highly-colored complexion; she wore green, which went well with her good deal of jewelry.

"I'm Rose," the redhead said reaching out her hand.

I forced a smile, but it disappeared that same second. I didn't stick out my hand because it was sweaty and that would have been gross. I didn't know what to do. "My hands are sweaty, so I can't shake your hand," I said, embarrassed once again.

A giggle escaped from her mouth building up more and more into a laugh. She put her hand to the side. "That's alright," she smiled. Her teeth weren't at all perfect. In fact, most of them were spaced out. They weren't entirely white either, but with that, she had a pleasant smile. "This is my friend Maddy. We were just heading to the cafeteria. Care to join us?"

Maddy waved at me. "I like your shirt. It's really, really nice."

I smiled at Maddy. "Thank you," I said. Turning back to Rose, I nodded my head. I followed behind the two as we headed towards the cafeteria.

So there I was. I was saved by a redhead and her friend. However, something deep inside my guts told me that everyone wasn't as kind as they were. I was sure to have enemies sooner or later. I hoped later.
