I'll be There for You

Phil heard Dan as he made his way up the stairs of their apartment. He was lying in bed scrolling through his laptop in the dark when Dan reached their hallway. Slowly, the door crept open, flooding the room with the hallway light.

"What are you still doing awake?" Dan asked coming over and sitting on Phil's bed.

"It's not that late." Phil said and squinted at the time on his laptop. 1:53am. "Oh." In reality Phil knew the time but wanted to wait up for Dan. He had a strange request.

Dan reached over and closed Phil's laptop and moved it to the side table. "You need to go to sleep."

"So do you." He replied.

"I just got back, I have an excuse, what's yours?"

Phil sighed. "The house was making funny noises again." He sounded more like a baby saying it out loud than it sounded in his head.

"Phil it's called our neighbours." Dan gave an exasperated sigh.

Phil smiled. "Honest, I heard footsteps in the hallway."

Dan wasn't impressed but returned the smile anyways. "Well if that's settled I'm going to bed." Dan stood.

"Wait." Phil knew how strange it sounded but he couldn't help it. "What it be weird if you slept in here tonight? It's just since that day where we napped on the couch together I haven't been able to sleep as well."

Dan gave a soft smile. "I noticed that too."

Phil knew he would sleep much better knowing Dan was by his side. A few minutes later Dan crawled into bed beside Phil. Phil wondered if he should feel awkward sleeping in the same bed as his best friend but he didn't. He rolled over to face Dan whose eyes were closed peacefully but he knew he wasn't asleep yet. He gently tucked a piece of lose fringe back in it's place on Dan's head making his eyes flutter open at the touch. Phil smiled softly at Dan and he returned the gesture. Phil laid on his back and Dan moved so his body was pressed to Phil's and he placed his head on Phil's chest.

"Dan." Phil breathed.

"Mm."

Phil was playing absentmindedly with Dan's hair. "I love you."

Dan's arm reached across Phil's body and he took his hand. "I love you too, Phil, I love you too."
