I wake to the sound of my alarm buzzing in my ear and the rough feeling of a cat licking my face.
I groan and hit snooze, flipping over and burying my face in the pile of pillows I have on my bed.
I feel my cat Milo purring as he lays down next to me.
I reach my hand out from underneath my heavy comforter and scratch his ears feeling the little torn part in his left one.
Milo used to be an alley cat. I found him in in the dumpster at my work when he was no older than a couple of months.
One of those bigger, meaner alley cats musta picked on him since he was the little one.
I of course, being the sucker I am, couldn't just leave him there....so I picked him up, placed him in a cardboard box I found laying next to the dumpster and took him home with me.
I was planning on taking him to the animal shelter the next morning, but that night he cuddled up to me in bed and purred up a storm, and woke me up the next morning with his rough tongue on my cheek.
I couldn't resist.
Ever since then me and him have been two peas in a pod.
I feel him shift under my hand and get up, hopping off of my mattress, signaling to me that it's time to get up.
I sigh and throw my hand back running it against the sandy brick wall behind me. I stretch my arms up to the ceiling and shift around before rolling off my bed and onto the cold, hardwood floor covered in my shaggy fur rug.
Don't worry. The fall isn't far. My mattress sits on the floor.
Yeah, yeah, I know, I've lived in this apartment for nearly 6 months and I still haven't gotten a bed frame, I'm lazy, I know. But it's fine. I kinda like it this way. It gives it a homey vibe.
I hear Milo go to kitchen area of my studio apartment and scratch at the cabinet under the sink where he knows I hide his food.
I pull on my wayyyyy too oversized tee shirt that is practically a dress and walk over to the kitchen where I start my coffee.
I head over to the cabinet beside the sink, which is filled to the brim with dishes, and grab one of the few clean coffee mugs.
I sigh and squint at the light coming in through the little window above my sink.
I'm lucky enough to have an apartment like this here in the city.
The concrete jungle that is every city in the US is already not enough earth for me, let alone if I lived life in an apartment with no windows.
That was my top priority when looking for a place, and I haven't regretted one bit of it.
I smile and open the sliding door of my balchony to grab milo's food and water dish, filling it up and placing it back on the concrete for him to make as much of a mess as he wants.
I check on my plants, outside and the ones in my window sill.
Calling them each by name as I water them.
I return to my coffee, which is finally done brewing, and pour myself a cup, taking a sip.
Ahhhhhhhhhhhh.
