Chapter One: The Raven's Clothes

A figure perched as a raven above Lord Ganondorf's grand hall. The cloak it wore revealed little shape, except that it was Hylian. One black-booted leg waved left and right like a pendulum, pausing now and then to give a tap on the wall. The Dark Lord in his throne paid no heed to the sounds; he was not finished with his current visitor.

"Please, I am but a messenger," the pilgrim stated. Ganondorf's impatient tapping of his hand unnerved the man. "The fight you should pick is with my master."

Lord Ganondorf scoffed. "Right. Just a messenger. They're always 'just' messengers."

The pilgrim cowered at the foot of the throne's imperious steps, knowing that bad news, such as he had delivered, meant an ill fate.

Lord Ganondorf stopped his hand and grinned. "Lucky for you, I need to send a reply." He saw the man suppress a sigh of relief. "Let your master know I have no tolerance for failure. That should be burned into his thick skull by now. Therefore, his fate shall be decided by Volvagia."

The pilgrim paled and fled. The Dark Lord's laughter rumbled throughout the castle, haunting the poor messenger as he escaped. The sound followed him until he entered the mountains shielding the castle from the rest of the world.

"Ah-ha-ha..." Lord Ganondorf finished. "What sport. You may come down now."

The Raven dropped, black cloak fluttering. It landed with a small thud, bending low on its knees and bowing its head.

"Rise. I have a task for you. Are you ready to fulfill it?"

The figure rose slowly, starting from its legs to its torso, and finally to its neck. The cloak swirled gently around the figure, revealing the slightest of curves. A scrap of dark, sandy hair fell out of the hood, its length reaching the figure's shoulder.

"What is it you require of me, master?" it said in its controlled but high voice. It looked up at Lord Ganondorf, letting the hood drop to its shoulders. The rest of the sandy hair escaped, hanging past the pointed ears, light blue eyes, and rounded chin. "What is it you wish?"

"Your clothes need replacing, Lila," Ganondorf answered. The Raven felt confusion. Since when did her Lord care about her appearance? She pushed it away as her Lord explained further. "There is a set of chainmail I need you to get. You will find it in Lake Hylia."

"Excuse me, master, but..." Lila hesitated. She didn't usually question him, and wondered what would happen if she did.

"Speak up! What is it?"

She winced but kept her gaze steady on Lord Ganondorf's face. "What exactly is my task? How will a bit of chainmail help?"

The Dark Lord's smile was that of one looking at a lesser being struggling to survive in his grasp. "My dear Lila, not just any chainmail. This chainmail is said to be impenetrable and is even called the Chainmail of Imperviousness. Quite a name, don't you think?"

Lila tried to hide her fear, though she knew he could see it. "Yes, master."

Lord Ganondorf waved his hand in the general direction of the door. "Now go, make yourself useful."

"Yes, my lord," she repeated, bowing her way out of the hall. Once the doors closed behind her, a small, winged creature came at her from above. It had a black, leathery body, taloned wings, and large eyes. The keese was aiming for her head.

"Watch where you're going, Mori," Lila complained.

The keese twittered a reply as it came to a soft seat on her right shoulder. "Does the master have a job for you?"

"Yes, he sent me to Lake Hylia for some chainmail. He said it's impenetrable, so it's important for his upcoming plans."

"Do you know where in the lake?"

"I don't know. I hope he doesn't expect me to swim around looking for it."

Mori flapped his wings. "Well, I do."

"You do? How do you know that?"

He took off and hovered slightly above her head. "Lord Ganondorf gave me the ability to find enchanted objects."

"He did that?"

The keese moved up and down as though in a nod. "Probably to help you."

Lila shrugged. "Well, that makes life a lot easier. Okay, Mori, lead the way." She followed her companion out the main doors of the castle. There she paused to pull out a small, u-shaped whistle. She gave it a short puff of air, then put it back and continued walking. In a few seconds, a light brown mare came riding up to her.

"Hey, girl," Lila said, giving the horse a rub. "You ready for a ride? We're going to the lake." She pulled herself onto the saddle, then made sure Mori wouldn't get left behind by storing the keese under her cloak. With a click of her heels and a quick "Hya!", they were off.
