Sitting in a dark alley, underneath the shadows casted by the large buildings that encased me below, I observed the people walking past me on the brightly-lit sidewalks. People who swept past me were completely unaware of the eyes following them, hidden in the darkness within the alley to their right.
Unconsciously, Evelyn's thoughts wandered back to the orphanage she had just ran away from in fear of facing rejection--of being kicked out because she was now an adult. Although she didn't leave anyone of importance back there, the orphanage was the closest thing she had to a home.
Shaking her head, she forced herself to ignore the heavy thumps of her aching heart that cried out silently into the merry night, only to be ignored, as the cheerful energy dissuaded such negative emotions to ruin such a night like this.
She had to think about where she was going to go. What she was going to do. She was hungry but more than that she was tired. She'd do anything to be able to sleep on that excuse of a bed she had back at the orphanage. Although a piece of cardboard could be comparably more comfortable to sleep on, she wouldn't want it any other way.
It was her safe haven. The place she went to when she wanted peace and quiet all these years. It was the type of comfort most people had in the form of a blanket or stuffed animal- for her that cot sufficed.
Amongst the crowd, Evelyn gazed at a family of three approaching down the walkway. A little girl was sandwiched between a broad, hefty man, the father, and a soft willowy-built woman, the mother. Both grasped one of the girl's hands, watching their daughter intensely with great joy and adoration that twinkled in their eyes under the bright street-lights, captivated by the smallest movements or sound that came from their daughter.
A twinge of pain and jealously pricked at Evelynn's hard exterior, as she gazed at the little girl who was totally unaware of how lucky she was to have two parents who loved her unconditionally.
Something deep inside her spat in disgust at the appearance of the family, rapidly fueling Evelynn's jealousy of the little girl even more.
Would be shame if that family had it's joy taken away from them. Ripped apart and thrown into the river at the edge of the forest.
Evelynn stilled, shocked that some part of her voiced doing such a sickening idea and her negative feelings for the girl dissipated in a blink of an eye.
The voice inside her scoffed.
Do not even think to associate yourself with someone like me. A weakling like you could never come even close to a powerful being as me.
Spooked and a a bit confused, Evelynn had no time to process what the voice inside her head meant as a plump man was suddenly roughly shoved against the wall inches to the spot she was curled up at.
Shocked, Evelynn's posture went rigid, as she let out a gasp of surprise by the sudden intrusion, however the two men hadn't heard her as they were both transfixed by what was going on in front of them.
"You promised to bring the money, Jeffrey." the tall, intimidating figure sneered at the bulbous, heavy man pressed against the wall.
Evelynn slowly got to her feet, pressing her back as flat as it would go against the building, keeping a steady eye on the two men who were unidentifiable due to the shadows and poor lighting in the alleyway. However, from a slight flicker of movement, she spotted a knife being held to the throat of the portly man by the more intimidating of the two .
"I-I-.. Listen," Jeffrey stuttered out, following by a nervous chuckle, "I don't want no trouble here, eh? Just give me another week. I swear I'll get the money to you then. I swear it."
Silence followed after that statement, his last words seemed to echo into the night, empty with it's meaning.
A dark chuckle broke the silence, that sent shivers down Evelynn's spine.
"I swear it." mocked the other mysterious man, who let out another snicker.
Suddenly the laughter stopped, the silence, thick and heavy fell over the earlier boisterous night. Evelynn's heart thumped heavily, her ears filled with the rapid pounding of her heartbeat. She attempted to calm herself with small quiet breaths, trying to put together her scattered brain, trying to come up with a plan to get out of her current predicament.
How the hell did I get so lucky to get into a situation like this?
Isn't that what you said last week Jeffy?"the man mocked, pressing the knife closer to the Jeffrey's throat.
"Please Dom. I swear it this time. Just one more chance. It'll be the last, I swear."
Again, the silence engulfed everything around Evelynn, as if the world was holding it's breath in anticipation, waiting for Dom, waiting to see what he would do.
"Dom I'll get you twice the sum. I swear on my mother's gra-"
Before Jeffrey could finish his sentence, he was violently cut off and let out a strangled gurgle instead. Evelynn heard the gruesome sound of knife piercing into flesh, followed by a bubbling choke, and a final, loud thump.
Evelynn felt all the air whoosh out of her, and without a second thought, she started running.
"What the fu-" Dom started, turning towards the sudden noise, before he started chasing the sound of retracting footsteps.
My legs pumped rapidly beneath me, running with the sleeves of my ridiculously oversized hoodie flapping around wildly.
My long tresses flew out of the security of my flimsy band, blowing distractingly across my face. Quickly I tucked the annoying hair behind my ears.
Hearing footsteps catching up to me, adrenaline rushed through my veins as I pushed myself even harder, making random turns at corners hoping to get this "Dom" guy off my trail.
Looking over my shoulder as I ran, I tried to decipher if he was close from the sudden quietness that surrounded me. Slowing down, I realized the footsteps that were chasing me seconds ago were gone.
Facing forward I found myself coming to an abrupt and clumsy stop, almost ramming into the wall that was just inches from me.
Shit. A dead end.
My face drained of it's color as I heard slow footsteps walk towards me from behind.
Turning around quickly, I was faced with a menacing figure who seemed to tower over me even from a few feet away. I let out a noise of distress and looked up to the sky hoping to something, anything, that I'd make it out of this situation.
"Well what do we have here?" a deep, menacing voice cooed, coming from the hooded figure that approached me.
"Please. I don't mean any harm." I said quickly, trying to keep my voice steady.
The figure continued to approach me in long, lazy strides, that held it's intimidating effect on me, as I unconsciously took a step back for each one he took forward.
This little dance continued on until my back reached the wall, and before I could let out a scream, a big calloused hand covered my mouth and a large frame pressed against my body to prevent any means of escape.
With a quick movement of his hands, Dom grasped my neck and twisted, and I fell into a peaceful blanket of darkness.
