I was going to school as usual, just walking at the side of the street with my headphones on, listening to some random music. I had never been that late for my lessons, I was usually an excellent student, but that morning I had woken up to the sound of my mom crying. I was 15 but I was mature enough to understand that my family was going through a tough period again.
I had moved to Miami when I was I kid with my mom, we once lived in Mexico so we technically immigrated here, trying to escape our country's problems. By the way, my father had moved later and had found a nice job, life was pretty good and I also got to have a little sister, who I love with all my heart. A few weeks ago my father lost his job and everything started crumbling down. I had never been that kind of girl who has a lot of friends, most of the time I was embarrassed because other girls at school were the 'dresses and parties' kind of girls, I liked parties and all that stuff but I felt so different from them. I was shy and I was ashamed of my family's economic problems, not that I was ashamed of my family, I loved my parents and I was grateful for everything they had gone through for me and Sofia but other people at school could not understand.
I got to school after running and I was out of breath, I had to stop for a second before I could open my eyes. I suddenly saw some girls who were approaching me, they all looked so nice. They came towards me with a wheel.
"We're having a party this night at my place, so that freshmen can get to know each other better, wanna come?" One of them smiled warmly to me. I felt so happy.
"Oh.." I said taking the wheel. "I will try my best, thank you so much by the way." I smiled back at her.
"It's a pleasure." She waved at me and turned back to walk away. I knew her, she was my primary school bestfriend's sister, she had always been that kind of good girl, and that made my day. I finally got to my class and the day passed by so quickly.
When I got home my mom was preparing dinner, I approached her and kissed her cheek happily.
"Where's Sofi?" I asked.
"She's upstairs having a little nap." My mom said. "She wanted to wait for you but she.." My mom said getting interrupted by a tiny sweet voice.
"Mila!" Sofia called, I laughed and my mom smiled. "Come here!"
"I'm coming" I said loud and let my bag on the floor. As I run up the stairs I saw a sleepy Sofia coming out from her bedroom.
"Shouldn't you be sleeping little monkey?" I asked sweetly, low key laughing.
"Yass, but I wanted you to sing for me. You know you're the only one who can!" Sofia said grabbing my hand. I kissed her head and nodded.
"Cmon!" I said taking her in my arms and running into her pink little room. I jumped on the bed, letting her sit on my stomach.
"What did you do at school!?" I asked her. She smiled so big, she loved going to school and meeting her mates, one thing she's didn't like was meeting new people. Shy, just like me, but once she had understood a person she was so affectionate and nice. We spent almost half an hour talking and singing and my five-year old sister finally fell asleep.
I walked downstairs to eat something and as I entered the kitchen my mom, looked at me and then at the table.
"What's that mija?" She asked.
I looked at the table and saw the wheel, I had totally forgotten about the party.
"Oh that's nothing.." I said grabbing a glass from the cupboard. "It's just a party some sophomores invited me to today."
"So do you think you're going?" She asked smiling.
"I guess not." I sadly said eating some of my salad.
"Why not, you can have fun!" My mom tried to convince me.
"I don't know, I would have to go alone, I don't know anybody there."
"But it's at Dinah's place, sorry if I read it.." She laughed. "You can ask her." In that moment the doorbell rang.
"I'll take it!" I said running over at the door.
"Hi!" The girl said smiling big.
"Dinah? What are you doing here?" I asked surprised but with a smile on my face.
"I was just wondering, so that my house is like in front of yours, if you're going to come to tonight's party. You know, I asked my sister to organize it because I wish I could get to meet new people at school!" She explained herself. "I see you're always by yourself at class, why don't you come along with my friends? We're going to have fun!" She was so excited and I was feeling so happy that she had thought about me.
"Hi Dinah!" My mom greeted at my back, scaring me to death.
"Mom!" I yelled.
"Hi Mrs.Cabello" Dinah said kindly. "Again with that Mrs., call me Sinu!" She smiled. Dinah did too.
"So Mila, are you going to that party?" My mom asked, sometimes she was too invasive and she pissed me off, but I tried my best not to get angry because I knew she did that for my good.
"If it's fine for Dinah, I will." I smiled.
"Yess!" My old friend exulted happily. "I will have another familiar face to look at if I feel lost." She laughed.
"Same for me" I smiled.
"So why don't you come to my place at 7 so we can get ready?" She asked.
"Definitely, see you there!" I smiled big and hugged her.
It felt a little immature, but I couldn't help but feeling super excited and nervous. I could have finally gotten to know some new people at my school and get some real friends.
By the time I could have a shower and read a little bit it was already late. I took my good dress, it was red and actually it was a bodysuit without sleeves, and went out.
When I got to Dinah's her sister opened the door and smiled at me.
"Upstairs they're waiting for you" She said. "I'm going out to eat something with my friends. See you at 9.." She let me in and then closed the door at her back.
I called Dinah from the stairs.
"Oh, hey Mila!" She yelled. "We're in the bathroom"
I walked along the hallway and saw Dinah and some other girls experimenting with make up.
"What are you doing?" I smiled lightly blushing. Dinah laughed.
"Mila these are Maggie, Lucy and Alex." She presented her friends to me. "And girls this is Mila!" The three girls greeted me and soon I started to feel very comfortable with them. I had never thought they could be that nice. We also ended up discovering we liked the same music and spent the next hour preparing and listening to our favorite songs.
It was 8:45 and Dinah was very nervous. She looked at us and talked. "Girls." She said.
"Could we try to drink some alcohol?" She asked, I felt so embarrassed, I had never drank not even a drop of alcohol.
"Dinah.." I said.
"I've never tried too, but I don't want to be unprepared.." She blushed and started laughing. Just a little vodka. We ended up drinking two bottles straight and then laying on the floor, laughing like never. Dani had come back and people at started arriving. It was 9:40 and I was feeling a little better. Me and Dinah were just chatting with some random guys when someone opened the door. I turned around to see a mesmerizing green-eyed human being waking in. I don't know if it was because of the alcohol, but she didn't even look real. Her dark hair was falling perfectly on her shoulders and her accentuated face lines were hypnotic. She turned and Dinah stopped talking.
"Lauren!" She yelled running towards her and hugging her. That Lauren girl smiled and my mouth fell open.
