"So you're telling me that there's nothing I can do?" Morgan asked, as she packed the last of the cash into her duffel bag.
Slinging it over her shoulder, she caught up with her partner, Henry, walking in pace besides him.
"Nothing. I'm telling you, Morg, if there was a way I could stay around, I would. But this flu has people fleeing to more medical based cities, and my parents are one of those people. I can't abandon them, you should know that."
"I know, but..." she paused, finding no more excuses to keep her friend from falling away.
"You'll be ok." Henry said, climbing out through the strategically cut window out into the back alley.
"I know I will, but will you?" Morgan followed suit, her long legs keeping pace besides his large strides.
"Morgan, there's no one in Atlanta more capable, besides you, of taking care of themselves. Just take care of your parents and Derrick, and I'll be back once this virus is handled."
They both threw the duffels into the back of a van, and started the car, driving out of the alley into the street. In the dead of night, no one was out, except for the casual jogger or druggie.
"Listen, go home. Use the money to pay off the apartment and George's debts, and then go buy some antibiotics. I'm hearing this virus isn't going well, and I wouldn't know what to do with myself if you caught it." Henry said, dropping Morgan off at her apartment complex. She nodded and headed inside, dropping her duffel onto the floor and yawning, flopping onto her couch, the rough cloth brushing her face as she fell asleep.
Morgan work abruptly to the sound of sirens and jets flying overhead. Instinctively, she slid the duffel under her couch and went onto her balcony. The highway was crowded, horns beeping and sirens screaming. Overhead, jets flew into the city, followed by helicopters and military trucks flew down the highway.
She turned as derrick banged down her door, grabbing her wrist and tugging her into the hallway.
"What's going on?" She yelled above all the noise, and he didn't answer. Instead, he tugged her down the stairs and into their parents van, along with them.
"We received a broadcast telling everyone to go into the city, it'll be safe there." Her dad said, starting the car and pulling out of the parking space.
"Safe from what?" Morgan yelled, just as a face pressed against her window. Morgan screamed as the face was half eaten, and the eyes were a cloudy green. Nothing was human about the creature, other than having the body and looks. Darrick pulled her away from the window as their father pulled out and sped down the road, leaving behind whatever back there following slowly, at a limping walk.
"What the hell was that!" She screamed, looking back.
"An infected. They die, then come back, and eat the living." Her mother said, looking concerned slightly.
"Holy shit." Morgan muttered, sitting down into her seat. Derrick held onto her arm still, and his grip was shaky. Above, more jets zoomed in, and they entered the city.
