Alicia laughed as Stacy let go.
Stacy saw Alicia glance up and saw that on the top shelf of Stacy's closet was the pretty box still tied with a bow that held Anna's expensive sweater.
"Give the new baby and the family a kiss for me Mom. My bags are ready to put in the car. I happen to know that right now there are sneak-peak sales on pre summer stuff, because a few of my friends have part time jobs. You should go check out downtown Mom. I'm telling you it will be worth your while. Since I am going to be shopping all day with Maria and Tanya, if there is anything great I'll pick it up for you." Stacy said. Alicia laughed.
"Oh honey, don't worry about me, I have everything I need. This is a gift for you to treat yourself. You've helped me a lot and you deserve it."
"Thank you Mom." Stacy said smiling big.
"I mean it Stacy, don't get into trouble now that you are on your own, it will be exciting to you but that doesn't mean you should compromise your morals." Alicia gently warned.
"Mom I promise it will be a morally strong, safe, fun trip as we will keep the witchcraft to a minimum and will stay away from the sacrifice parties." Stacy said with sweet sarcasm.
"That is terrible." Alicia laughed. "You scare me sometimes."
They hugged one more time before Alicia rushed out of the house in a slow hurry so she wouldn't slip on the ice coating the sidewalk to her car.
Stacy looked at the box that caught her Mom's attention. She knew she wasn't going to see either of her parents for the rest of the day so the box was actually in a state of non-existence in everyone's mind.
Except for Stacy's mind of course.
It wasn't like Anna would see Stacy wearing her sweater either for she was out of town following her brother Jake, so what would be the harm in wearing it for just one day? She didn't have to return it right away. Stacy wanted to look rich so the people in the stores would treat her better because it would put her in a higher status by looking great. If she looked like she had money to spend, she'd get more positive attention than if she were a window shopper, or glanced at as a thief because store employees always assumed young people stuffed their pockets, which they do, Stacy just didn't want to be included in that grouping.
Contemplating the pros and cons of the situation, Stacy wasn't sure if she should risk it or decide if the risk was worth taking. Stacy brought the box down from her closet and slowly took the bow off. She carefully pulled the sweater out and watched as it slinked out of the package with a slight soft swish over the paper tissue it was cradled in. The material lay like magical water in her hands. She could really impress the people at the schools she was checking out with this sweater. Nobody would miss it and it would give her an expensive air which would help her during her tours, Stacy thought. Maybe she'd wear it shopping and nowhere else so there was less risk of losing it, after all she was buying new clothes today.
Stacy felt nervous and deceitful so her hands began to sweat. She laughed because she wasn't sure what scared her more, getting caught, or explaining that she just wanted to touch it one more time like a little girl playing in her mother's good jewelry box. Stacy hated that she was being irresponsible, especially after her parents just stuffed her pockets with money. Stacy knew she should just leave it alone, but she couldn't. She wanted to feel it on her body once again.
Only her friends would know she borrowed it but not from whom for they would assume it was from her mother. They would all be surprised the sweater was Anna's because everyone knows Stacy couldn't stand Anna's best friend Harmony and wouldn't ask to borrow anything from either one. Stacy laughed. She felt criminal and blood rushed through her system making the water in her body glisten a thin veil of sweat.
