"Run; your friends aren't yours anymore."
Manette, the young witch hated that it had to be this way. But nothing lasted forever, thanks to that jailor. How could the town not realize he was the real guilty one? That was a dream she had, and when someone finally took action; it was the ones whom the town claimed were guilty; the mafia.
Then again, town always disapproved of almost everything new. They were the ultimate scum, this she knew. Shooting anyone who enters your home, breaking into people's homes, executing people based on their suspicions is what she called lunacy.
But of course; this generalization had to come from somewhere. Why would anyone else care if it didn't? It started with the lynching of someone she saved from death many times, yet couldn't she couldn't shield him forever.
It was back when the town still somewhat tolerated her.
Another day for Manette came and gone as always. With the sun that once lit up the burnt clouds beginning to set, her enemies marched towards their homes while her companions lingered amongst themselves. If they discovered that she was watching them so intently, she would have been dead for sure. Yet, her young dark magic protected them from their fate many times. It was weak, granted; but while it wasn't more than a hunch, it was enough to plan around it. She was fine with them not trusting her, which was the part she could relate to the most.
It was almost ironic how much the town hated the mafia. Once the sun sets upon the houses, it would be perfectly fine for suspicious neighbors to break into houses just to see if their neighbor was a criminal. In worst case scenario, one unlucky innocent would fall prey to the uttermost scum of the town. They claimed they were doing it for justice; they were known as the Jailor and Vigilante. It made her sick to her stomach how the whole town blindly followed them. They were just monotone parasites, the lot of them.
She couldn't blame the paranoid veteran if he shot them; they were all guilty anyways. Guilty until proven innocent was their logic, and no one was truly innocent.
Manette's door swung open, her house was clean and pleasant. She took care to wash the dishes and sweep the floor that day. It was a welcoming atmosphere, yet she couldn't care less. The day didn't play out as she planned, but they probably planned it. The door slammed shut with a loud thud, locking it slipped her mind completely. The only one she could think of who would knock would have been a doctor of sheriff. But they were the last people on her mind at the moment.
She tossed her occult book which she clutched by her side the whole day onto her soft bed, she inhaled deeply; her futile attempts at screaming was muffled with her hands on her mouth. "Who do those people think they are?" She hissed through her teeth, "They're the evil ones, not the Mafia!" As she recollected the joyful faces of the criminal scum that called themselves town, her young face contorted all the more. "Damn them all to hell." Oh, how she wished her magic was strong enough to do such a thing. It was like her ultimate fantasy. The man was so young; he barely looked eighteen years old. The way his eyes filled with tears as he stared at the crowd that demanded he hang made her want to cry along with him. If only the town wasn't so insensitive, she wouldn't have been holding herself back. Damn Sheriff, he acted like an executioner with that sly grin.
She didn't use her abilities that night, she couldn't have. She was doomed the moment he hung, after all.
Her thoughts were brought to an end with a sound she dreaded; the heavy banging on her door. "Hurry up, Miss." A rough male voice commanded her, it sounded rude, despite using the word 'miss'. She gasped sharply; the very tone of his voice added to the strong feeling of dread. While she would normally sigh and open the door, she couldn't find the strength to. She just wanted to back away from the possible threat and stand at a safe distance. The lock would keep him out, anyways.
