“Excuse me.” She said and walked quickly from the table and headed in the direction of the bathroom.
“Would that be all for now?” I asked and everyone nodded, barely paying attention to me and I huffed as I left the table. Pricks.
I was supposed to walk back to give a check to another table but I noticed the girl hadn’t been back. I went to the bathroom to see if she might’ve been there. Obviously I can’t go inside because it’s the women’s restroom but I waited until she came out. She came out literally five seconds later and smiled lightly at me.
“Is there something wrong?” I asked. She shook her head.
“I’m not trying to be rude or anything but, do your hands shake a lot?” I asked in the most polite voice I could. She nodded. She really doesn’t like to talk I guess?
“I used to know someone that had that. You should just relax; she had it because she was always stressed and anxious about stuff.” I explained.
“Thank you.” She said, smiling a bit. “I’m Mariana but I like Marie better.” She said, introducing herself.
“I like Marie too. I’m Harry.” I said. I smiled and shook her hand.
“Nice to meet you Harry, as much as I’d love to stay here and talk I think I should get back.” She said. I nodded.
“So should I because I really don’t have a choice anyways.” I explained and she laughed, it was like a chime of bells and I smiled. As I was walking away, I turned to her quickly. “What’s your favourite dessert?” I asked.
She pursed her lips and thought for a bit. “Chocolate cake.” She said and smiled as she walked back to her table. I smiled back and took a mental note.
Marie seemed…nice. She wasn’t stuck up like every rich person in this fuckup of a town. I was waiting for the food to be ready so I could bring it out to Marie’s table. The food was done moments later and I brought it out.
I reached the table and saw the adults still talking and the guy was texting under the table while Marie sat there, picking at her nail polish. As soon as she caught my eye, she smiled and her eyes brightened up as if I saved her from something. I smiled and handed everyone their food.
“It’s about time. You do have some nerve coming late again don’t you?” The guy across Marie said.
Is he fucking kidding me?! I closed my eyes and huffed loudly. If he says one more thing I swear I’m going to throw his head so hard against the wall he won’t even be able to read a clock to see if I’m late.
“Why don’t you mind your business? He’s obviously doing his job and this place is packed!” Marie exclaimed, causing everyone at her table to stop talking. I half smiled. Who knew she could speak up like that?
“I’ll be back later with the bill.” I said, trying to contain my smile.
Marie’s POV
Everyone went back to conversing after my outbreak. It just made me mad that Harry was getting treated like that for no reason and he seemed nicer than these other people I was with at this table. I just ate though, in my own little world. I wondered what it would be like to work here, I could try it? But my parents would never allow that. I guess I just wanted to hang out with Harry more. What am I even saying? I barely know him! But I’d like to.
“What are you studying in UNI?” Chris asked, trying to make small talk, it was like this after I spoke up for the first time at the table, besides when I told Harry the food I wanted.
“I’m studying to be a pediatrician.” I replied, playing around with the salad on my plate which I didn’t want because I hated salad.
“What about your dad’s business?” Chris asked.
I shrugged. “He’s leaving it to me but I might sell it to someone else. People are waiting to buy.” I said.
He nodded. “Especially since it’s such a good company, people would be dying to get their hands on it.” He replied.
I nodded and I saw that everyone was done eating and my dad was pulling out his credit card. “I’ll pay.” He stated. Everyone thanked him and Harry came back in that moment with the bill.
“Will that be all for tonight?” Harry asked. My dad nodded and Harry left to put the charge on the credit card. He came back shortly and my dad hadn’t even left him a tip but he was getting up to leave.
“Let’s go.” My mom said.
“I’ll be there in a minute just going to the bathroom.” I lied but everyone nodded and walked out to the cars, just standing there and talking. I pulled out my wallet and took out 70 pounds and left them in the little black pocket book thing which was for tips.
I put my jacket on and was ready to leave when Harry came running to me. “Here Marie, this is for you.” He said, handing me a bag.
“Thank you, what is it?” I asked, smiling.
“You’ll see and by the way, thanks for the tip.” He said gratefully.
“It’s no big deal. I guess I’ll see you around Harry.” I replied. He nodded, gave me a smile and walked away.
I walked out shortly after and stopped before I reached the doors and looked into the bag. It was a box with Harry’s phone number on it and the words ‘For Marie’ on it so I opened it up. Inside of it was chocolate cake with chocolate icing, my favorite. I smiled widely at the cute gesture although I knew I’d feel guilty about eating it later I wouldn’t let this go to waste.
“Have a good night!” Niall exclaimed as he smiled from the front desk and I waved and smiled back. Yeah, this was a good night.
I walked outside and saw everyone waiting for me. “Marie, Chris was telling us about a party that his friend was having tomorrow and he wanted you to come along.” My mom said. I mentally rolled my eyes. I don’t even like this kid!
“Oh, I’ll see.” I said, quietly.
“She’d love to come.” My mother said, answering for me. I wanted to smack her.
“Great, I’ll pick you up tomorrow around 20:00.” Chris said, smiling. I nodded my head and all of us said goodnight as we all got into our own cars and my father drove off.
We got home quickly and I ran up to my room. Tomorrow is going to suck. But oh well, what can I do? I guess I could text Harry the whole time…if he wouldn’t mind? I took my phone out of my purse and typed in Harry’s number to my phone to text him and started eating my cake in my room.
Marie: Hey Harry
He responded a couple minutes later.
Harry: Hey, eager to text me are you? Xx :)
Yeah I could make it through this party.
