Good Girl

Every morning she wakes up,

(to keep her mother from crying.)

She tries to do her hair and makeup,

(to impress the boy who doesn't care.)

She pulls down her long sleeves,

(to keep them from asking questions.)

She smiles at the bus driver,

(even though he doesn't smile back.)

She turns in her essay on time,

(and the teacher says it needs to be rewritten.)

She eats her lunch,

(so she doesn't go to the hospital again.)

She stays quiet around her friends,

(because they won't listen anyway.)

She goes home to an empty house,

(there's still shattered glass on the floor.)

And that night when her dad hits her,

she doesn't hit back,

(like a good girl.)
