A/N: As the title says this is an MC Reader one-shot. Also, there are spoilers from Seven's route (I'm already fucking stating his name in the title, what's getting into me, of course there will be other spoilers), but taking the fact that I don't usually do MC Reader one-shots I considered about actually warning before I start with the story itself.
So spoilers - Mainly about Day 8 & 9 on Seven route. You've been warned.
The story will turn out in it's own way afterwards, though. It will follow a seperate plot after the phonecall, just saying because I don't want people to think the real route turns out like that as well if they haven't played it yet... or at all. I hope you enjoy it, though.
Ignorance. Hostility. Coldness. Harshness.
All emotions you didn't actually think you'd receive from Seven.
Today was probably like any other day really. Yeah, with the exception that you lived in a dead person's apartment, with a bomb about to explode if something happened because it was supposed to protect some confidential shit, killing off both you and the person you liked who was by the way in the apartment just as well, but was acting totally... well...
Shitty.
Yeah, that was the right word. Cussing is usually not your style, but in moments like these you can't help but murmur a 'damn it' or 'shit' from time to time when Seven wasn't listening to you, having his headphones on and ignoring you full on. With a sigh your back hit the sofa's cushion harshly, trying to somehow draw the attention of the red headed hacker to yourself in vain. His back steadily turned to you, headphones on, mumbling some words you couldn't really catch the meaning of under his breath as his fingers were nonstop working on the keyboard.
And then you thought of a plan.
Getting your phone in hand you dialed Seven's number from the messenger, hearing the beeping sound for a few seconds while the phone's ringtone went off right by Seven's side, taking his attention as the screen lit up. One, two, three beeps, his hands froze on the kayboard. Four, five, six, the finger of his left hand twitched and before the seventh beep could reach your ear his hands shot out and grabbed the phone, putting it by his ear and answering with an irritated voice:
"... Why are you calling me again? I almost just ignored it." It wasn't exactly like that from what you could see from your place, but you decided not to say that out loud. "I told you not to talk to me." He continued without even facing you. "But now you're calling me? I guess you don't think I'm serious?"
His eyes glanced back at you for a second before he harshly stated: "It's time to sleep. Just go to bed."
When you ignored his request and stayed firmly sitting on the sofa, he rolled his eyes and glared your way, now fully facing you. "I'm going to push you the more you try to come into my life. I don't care if you get hurt."
"I don't care if I get hurt even if you keep pushing me away." You stated firmly into the speaker but your eyes were pinned to his in determination.
"Are you some robot? You will get hurt." His tone grew more angry with his next sentence: "Stop hurting yourself and stop interfering with my life!" He harshly spat into the speaker even though you were clearly able to pinpoint he didn't care about the phone by his ear. His words were set for you and for you only, in the real world. "Why are you so interested in me? I'm nothing. You're so persistent and rediculous."
"Why is it rediculous to like you? Is it that strange? I like you, Seven. I don't care if you don't like me back, but... I want to help you, to know more about you."
His glare was hard and piercing in a second, but a moment afterwards his eyes averted from yours and you could clearly see the flicker of pain flashing across his bright golden orbs. Your face twisted in one of internal conflict and sadness while you listened to his cold tone, the words coming as venom into your mind. "Never mind... I don't want to talk any more. Do whatever you want if you want to get hurt. I warned you."
With a last angry glance in your way he spat his last words: "And I'm not going to take your calls so don't bother." With that he hung up and his earphones were back on his head. The line kept beeping monotonously by your ear as you could feel your heart clenching inside of your ribcage. He was too harsh this time. Too much for your own pure self. Your eyebrows furrowed as you tried not to let the tears spill out.
Why were you trying again? And then there was this question - the first one you ever asked yourself while looking at Seven's depressed and hostile face for the first time - What kind of life had he had, how much has he been through for it to be so heavy on his heart, enough for such hostile demanour - a self-defense mechanism of high level - to erupt so abruptly? What has he been through? How much did it really hurt? How traumatized did it leave him? How much did he miss out on the pure joys of life while he was like that?
You sensed yourself already crying, tears spilling quietly out of your bright (e/c) eyes as you unconsciously thought all too hard about Seven's past. After all, he must've been through much and it must've been hard, traumatizing even. Most probably he wouldn't go over it. But you wanted to at least show him what was to be truly happy, not to worry. You quickly decided to wipe away the tears without Seven actually seeing them but looks like it was too late.
The moment your hands shot to your face to wipe away the soft skin from the tear stains, your eyes darted to the red head and you could clearly see his golden orbs stare back at you with their shrinking pupils. He saw you crying. Best way out was out of the door and to the hallway but he could see you through the CCTV anyway, you had nowhere to run to. And yet you tried to do so.
You stood quickly up, taking your phone in hand as your legs moved swiftly and your body was out of the door by the time Seven had said your name and got up on his own feet. You slammed the door of the apartment after yourself and taking the fact that it was opening on the inside you managed to lock it quickly enough for Seven not to reach in time.
"(Y/N)! What do you think you're doing?! Open the door right this instant!" His screams reached your ears through the door as your body slid down the wooden surface, a sigh exiting your lips shortly after.
"I-I'm okay. I'm here. So just go and do your work without worrying for me. I'm... gonna go to the end of the hallway, nowhere else. You'll be able to see it through the CCTV so don't worry. But please don't insist on me going back inside right now." You stated, while furiously wiping the tears away from your face, you were embarrassed you'd cried while thinking of how hard it must've been for Seven in the past for him to grow so hostile to people that want to get close to him.
"How do you expect me not to insist on you getting back inside?! Not to worry?! Why were you crying just now anyway?! (Y/N), it's an hour past midnight, don't go anywhere, just go to sleep."
"I-I want to stay by your side. You said you didn't care what I do and now you're suddenly being overly protective." You snapped while your sleeves wiped the skin of your cheeks from the leftover tear stains.
"I'm not overly protective. I don't want all my efforts going into the trash just because something happened and emotions overwhlemed you. What if someone kidnaps you?! Open this door right now and get back inside!"
"You can decode the bomb and kick the door down without making it blow up the whole place. It'll take you around ten minutes so I'm okay with waiting until you do it. If you don't want to though, just leave me alone for a second. I'll get back inside once I'm sure my feelings are stable and I won't have another outburst." There was silence on the other end of the door for the overall of ten seconds before you heard Seven's voice again.
"... Are you fully sure?"
"Of course."
"Then I'm watching you the whole time and I'll wait for you on the other side of the door. Annoy me if you want. If it'll help you get better." His words were soft even though he tried to make them seem cold and you chuckled at the last part. He seemed to care a lot despite denying it and trying to push you away all the time.
"... Okay." You nodded your head, eyes straying to the CCTV and you tried imagining his eyes on the other end even though you realized it wouldn't be the same anyway.
Seconds passed and slowly turned into minutes - probably forming around half an hour by now - the time was slowly dragging around you and your back was still against the door, you could almost hear Seven's steady breathing on the other side of it and for a moment you would've thought he had fallen asleep, but that was not so likely to happen. He said he would watch you after all and even if he did push you away all the time since he came you could see he was hard-working and very loyal, so he stood behind his words. You felt your eyes on their way to close but quickly enough they were back to their open state - you couldn't let yourself drift off now. With a slight sigh through your nose you lifted yourself on your feet and looked at the CCTV, smiling slightly when you heard shuffling on the other side of the door. It seemed Seven was getting quite lively with the indication of your movements.
"I'm coming inside." You stated shortly and went for the door, once again inputting the password, then opening the door to find Seven's worried face on the other side. Just briefly behind his back you could see a few sandwiches all in different dishes, drinks and a book. Did he consider bargaining with you for you to enter and then brush it off? Most probably so. But he would never actually admit, so putting it under question would be useless right now.
"Is everything okay? Why were you crying?"
"I'm fine. Got too emotional is all." You walked past him and he closed the door after you, placing his laptop on the desk and walking after you towards the kitchen, you could feel his gaze burning a hole in your back.
"I made sandwiches. It's not much but if you want to calm down we have some tea and maybe reading a book would do, too. I couldn't get my hands on anything else since I was literally locked in here after all." You held in the chuckle to his joke, indication of the fact that he could be cheery and happy after all. The grin however, you couldn't hide one bit. Trying not to face him as to not be questioned, you took ahold of a sandwich to your liking, free hand brushing over the cover of the book he had left on the table gently as you thought of how caring Seven could actually be if he wanted to.
Liking him was not a mistake. Not at all in fact. Being bright and positive and as stubborn as possible wasn't a mistake either. It never would be. Even if you would be rejected in the end. It wouldn't truly hurt since all you wanted for Seven was to be happy and not close people out or isolate himself, to stop doing everything by himself. If you managed to do that and bring some happy emotions into his heart you would be more than satisfied. Acceptance of your feelings would not be needed. Mutual feelings would not be needed. His happiness was all you could try to achieve right now and that's what you were trying to do.
"Thank you, Seven. I feel like you don't get it as much as you have to, so thank you. You're truly great." You smiled after turning to face him and his eyes met yours.
"It's just a sandwich." His confused face made you chuckle shortly before you took a bite from said sandwich and grinned again after gulping down the chewed substance. For him it may have been a sandwich but for you it was something that hinted towards the fact that he cared for you.
"... Maybe." The smile didn't waver on your features and you could suddenly feel yourself tilting your head in confusion when his gaze abruptly averted from yours, cheeks tinted in slight pink. "What is it?"
"You should really go to bed. You need rest. I need to work. Both are equally important things."
"I'm not going to sleep, but I might just let you do your work."
"If I reject your idea?"
"Unfortunately there's not such a variant for you."
"What is it?" He rolled his eyes and you felt yourself grin while leaving the sandwich back on the dish, then gesturing towards the corner he always sat at.
"Just go and sit down like you usually do."
"... Fine." With a sigh, he went back to the corner and plopped down, sighing again before suddenly feeling a weight on his back, pressing onto his body. "W-What are you doing, (Y/N)?!" He exclaimed, not daring to move in fear he might hurt you with an abrupt movement even though he was majorly embarrassed at this position you shared. You pressed your back further against his, feeling his body temperature give out some of its warmness to your own body as your head lay right inbetween his shoulder blades and your hair briefly tickled his neck.
"I'm just keeping you company. It sucks not to have someone by your side. Even when you have to concentrate. And since I have no intentions to sleep and neither do you, I'll make you company while you work. Don't pay me attention and work."
He kept silent but felt somewhat obliged to comply with your request. The warmness of your body on his back calmed him. At least that way he didn't need to look back towards the insides of the apartment every two seconds in order to make sure you were there. He was more relaxed and did his work more quickly, hearing your steady breathing and small movements from when your nails would occassionally hit the screen of your phone when you texted in the chatroom. Soon enough, the slight clicking wasn't heard anymore and for a second Seven's fingers paused on the keyboard of the laptop. He slowly turned his head around, spinning only a small part of his body so that you woudn't sense only to see you sleeping while leaning against his back.
With a sigh and a small smile creeping up on his lips, he slowly stood up and made sure not to wake you up while craddling you in his arms and placing you on the bed afterwards. You were so cute in your sleep, adorable even - so beautiful, too. He couldn't stop the small sad smile from springing up on his lips. Stubbornness was a trait you had in common with him and for a second he wondered which one of you two would give up first but the answer came easy to the mind - of course it wouldn't be you. As he couldn't contain himself, Seven leaned down and pecked your forehead gently then caressed your cheek with a smile while hearing a satisfied hum rumble in your throat as you slept.
After admiring you for another three steady minutes the red head went back to his place in front of the computer and chuckled lightly. "You're such a liar, (Y/N). You told me you didn't intent on sleeping at all. Who's gonna keep me company now?" When he didn't receive an answer he just huffed while glancing at you again, then turning back to his laptop screen, mumbling: "As much as I reject you, you'd always keep me company anyway, right?"
That question's answer is even all too obvious for me to ask. A genuine gentle smile stretched the corners of his lips when his fingers started hitting the keyboard's letters once again, his soft baritone voice breaking the silence that was created in the dark room with a tender whisper.
"... Of course you would."
