Chapter I

"Feel the BURN!"

Chat Noir leapt to the side, narrowly dodging the gigantic fireball that the newest akuma victim, Pyra, hurled at him. He flicked his tail in irritation before launching himself to an adjacent ledge to avoid a second fireball.

This had to be the toughest baddie they'd faced thus far. Though they knew where the akuma was - a small lighter in her left hand -they couldn't get anywhere near it without combusting.

"Heads up!"

Ladybug's warning had barely reached his ears before the ledge beneath him began to crumble. Reacting purely on instinct and praying that he wouldn't cross the path of a fireball, he jumped in the direction his partner's voice had come from. He landed on a rooftop and scurried to a raised structure that the female hero was hiding behind.

Just as he reached the structure and pressed his back against the warm bricks, a fireball collided with their cover. Chat's ears flattened against his head as a fearsome crack filled the air. His heart hammered in his chest and he took several deep breaths to calm it.

He saw Ladybug giving him a worried glance out of the corner of his eye.

Ever since they arrived, Pyra had been zeroed in on him, not once aiming at Ladybug unless she was close to the cat-like hero. They both figured that Chat had done something to make her mad before she was akumatized. It was either that, or she just had a thing against cat puns.

Chat Noir could tell from the look in her eyes that she knew he was struggling. In an attempt to mask his exhaustion, he lifted his ears and plastered a lopsided smile on his face. "You got a plan, M'lady?"

Ladybug searched his eyes for a moment, obviously seeing right through his disguise, but soon nodded. She leaned around the corner to peer at Pyra. Chat followed suit. "See how
she pauses between each throw to make another fireball?" Her partner looked for what she was talking about.

The akuma, orange-skinned and clad in a red suit with fire designs, was standing at the far end of the rooftop with a lighter in her hand. She brought the akumatized object to her right hand and cupped her fingers around the small flame. The fire pooled in her palm, growing steadily larger as she held the lighter close. In about five seconds, she had a sizeable orb of fire hovering a centimetre above her hand.

Before Chat realised it, the flame was was hurtling towards him. Luckily for him, Ladybug pulled him back behind the wall just as the fireball collided with their cover. Sweat pooled along his brow as an immense wave of heat passed by him, too close for comfort.

"What about it?" Chat asked, his ears flat again. He had a bad feeling that Ladybug was planning something reckless.

"Well, since she seems to be concentrated on you, I think that - if you distract her - I can get close enough to take the lighter and purify the akuma," she replied, confirming Chat's prediction with her words. He felt the cold fingers of dread wrap around his insides. Her idea was a long-shot at best and a suicide mission at worst.

Chat wanted to tell her no, wanted to offer her another option, something that wouldn't result in his Ladybug getting hurt. Or worse. But he couldn't think of any other way; this akuma was just too strong.

He closed his eyes and, with a reluctant sigh, nodded his head. Ladybug gave him a small smile and was about to rush out from behind their cover when he reached out and grabbed her wrist. She turned back to look at him, confused. He met her gaze and said with pleading eyes, "Be careful, okay, Bugaboo?"

She smiled again and scratched behind his ears, making him close his eyes and let out a quiet purr. "I will, Chaton."

And with that, she was gone.
