"will you be able to come for new years?" i pressed send, crossing my fingers that my boyfriend, asa, would be home.

"i don't think so" i received. i slouched, my vision blurring with tears.

december 30th alone. great.

i laid down on my carpet, looking at nothing in particular.

.

i must have fallen asleep because bright sunlight was peering in through my window shades.

i sat up and looked at my phone, looking at my notifications, some of which included missed calls from asa. i called him back, still rubbing my eyes. my eyes drooped as my phone ringed.

"hello?" i heard a voice from the phone. i shot up, awake again.

"good morning," i replied with a smile on my face, wishing he could see it.

we talked about random things that have happened during his day so far, eventually, he told me he had to go. i listened a bit more, hearing speaking from an intercom.

"what is that voice in the background? i though you were with your family?" i questioned

"i have to go" he said abruptly before hanging up.

i furrowed my eyebrows, disappointed but not knowing why.

i gathered my things, grabbed my keys and made my way to the grocery store.

time to get some ice cream.

.

as i climbed the stairs to my apartment, i glanced at my watch.

6pm.

wow; either i took a really long time at the grocery store, woke up really late, or both.

i spent about 5 hours, eating chips and surfing channels. by the time i snapped out of it, the room was dark, the only source of light being the tv.

oh shit. i sat up and flipped the channel to the traditional new year's eve channel. i watched bands and singers perform and tried not to doze off.

11:45 and i heard the front door handle being moved. i jumped and ran to my kitchen, grabbing a kitchen knife and peering at the front door from my table.

asa!

he looked around, presumably looking for me.

i ran up to him, surprising him. i jumped in his arms, embracing him.

"i though you weren't gonna be home," i mumbled into his ear.

"surprise," he replied. i felt his smile on my cheek which made me happier than i already was.

"so you were at the airport?" i asked

he nodded, laughing at my amazement.

we both realized what we were wearing and laughed.

we both had on pajamas and styled messy hair.

we collapsed on the couch, cuddling, listening to the music in the background.

the music faded and all i could think about was how warm i felt in his embrace.

we must have sat there for a while because the announcers basically screeched that there was on minute left of 2016.

i leaned my head on his shoulder and we both watched the ball drop.

"5, 4, 3, 2, 1,"

asa looked at me and childishly slapped a grin on his face.

"happy near year," i managed to say against his lips.

"happy near year, love," he replied.

and that was the only moment that mattered. me and him, him and me.
