Margaret got older, went to school
Sometimes quiet but no ones fool
Trouble was we were soon at war
Or else she would have learned much more
Than: reading, writing, how to knit
socks for sailors; doing her bit.
Kids too often in shelters hid.
With enemy bombers overhead
They didn't learn too much in there
Distracted, scared, real lessons rare.
Sometimes other kids would tease her
Call her names and bother her.
Most of all she'd hate the 'b' word
There'd be fights if that was heard.
All in all not too much learning
May as well leave and be off earning.
Still Margaret might have known success
If it hadn't been for what happened next.
