Church Crookham, Hampshire

So Margaret went to live with Gran
Which seemed at first a better plan.
But Margaret's Gran still blamed the child
The slightest thing would make her wild.
A child's board and lodgings don't come cheap
So she made clear the girl should earn her keep.
No tolerance there for idleness.
And for childish feelings she couldn't care less.
She thought the child should be put to work
And woe betide if she should shirk.
She complained about Margaret reading books.
And we're not just talking dirty looks.
Margaret's books would provoke such ire
She'd threaten to throw them on the fire.
Whether she did I'm not quite sure
But life with Gran was harsh and poor.
It's clear that the child was put upon
Will it get any better? You'll have to read on.
