THX! -Two Friends

I woke up like any old day, walking down the hall to eat breakfast. I could smell the scrambled eggs, bacon, and toast being placed on the table. As soon as I walked in I knew something was up. My mom was sitting at the table and across from her was this boy, not much older than me. Black hair, and he smelled like fish or the ocean or something like that. He looked dirty and tired. "Hey mom, who-"

"Leo Valdez, nice to meet you!" he said with a wide grin.

"Hey, I'm Charlotte Mason.." I replied as my dog, Friday jumped on his lap and slobbily (is that even a word?) licked his face.

"Charlie, Leo is my late friend Maria's son, he went on a trip with his dad and crashed here, his dad didn't make it..." mom said trailing off.

"Okay cool!" I said trying to be upbeat, this kid lost his mom and his dad, "You can come with me to pick the peppers to go with breakfast!" I wanted to get to know this dude, give him a friend.

"That would be great dear!" mom said happily.

I motioned him to come with me over to the back door. He followed suit. "Sorry about Friday, she loves people."

"That's okay! I love dogs."

"So Leo, how old are you?"

"Seventeen, how about you?"

"Almost seventeen, in three weeks. If it makes you feel any better, my dad was a fisherman and he died shortly after my little sister, Alex was born." I said motioning to my ten-year-old sister sitting in the hammock not far away.

She saw us and walked over, "Hey sis! Who's this! Oh don't tell me, did you finally get a boyfriend?"

My cheeks turned bright red, "No, this is Leo! He's mom's late friend's son. He's gonna be staying with us for a little while."

"Oh, I saw you looking at him and I thought-"

"Aaaaanywaay!" I quickly cut her off. While Leo wiggled his eyebrows and I rolled my eyes in response. I knew he and I would get along. We plucked the peppers and some tomatoes that were ripe from the garden and started to head inside when we heard a high-pitched scream. All three of us rushed inside to see what was the matter. I saw a wierd huge dog thing and my mom had a scratch across her body as she fell on the floor. "MOM!!!" I screamed. My step-dad walked in carrying a sword--? He brought it above his head and with one swift move stabbed it through the wierd dog's head. "Mark I-I..." I said inbetween sobs but I couldn't say anything.

He turned to all of us, "Get in the car, all of you, there will be more coming!"

We all darted to the car, when Alex "WHAT ABOUT MOM!"

Mark ran into the house and we waited, Leo fidgeting his his hands. "Do you know what happened back there?" I asked worriedly.

"It's hard to explain and I'd rather let your step-dad tell you," he said thoughtfully.

After about ten minutes or so Mark came out of the house, without mom, but with Friday. He had tears running down his face even though I could tell he was trying to be strong. Oh, no. Mom. Words couldn't fathom how upset I was. Dying inside, tears running down my face as I sobbed, my sister did the same, Leo looked sad, but I know he's seen death before. Mark placed Friday in the backseat with us. He hopped in the driver's seat and grabbed out his GPS. He typed out something: Long Island, New York. Why are we going there? I could feel the adreneline pumping in my veins as we zoomed off down the road. I didn't dare look back at our home.
