Elena's POV

Liam was driving me home. I rested my head on the window watching the streets and houses pass by. The whole car ride was quiet. Neither of us spoke. We just glanced at each other once in a while and Liam would give me a reassuring smile that showed that things were going to be okay. It wasn’t an uncomfortable silence though. Liam knew that I needed time to calm down so that’s what he gave me.

Liam turned in on my block and pulled into my driveway.

I climbed out of the car. “Thanks Liam.” When I heard his voice, I leant in through the window that was rolled down.

Liam cupped my face with his hands. “No problem, and don’t let those stupid people get to you. Got it?”

I smiled. “Got it.” He let my face out of his grasp and sat back comfortably in his seat. I waved bye when he pulled out of my driveway, watching his car disappear down the street.

I walked towards my house preparing myself. I walked in knowing exactly what my mom would say. She was going to ask how my day was and I was going to tell her exactly what happened since I couldn’t hide anything from her. My eyes were still kind of puffy from all the crying and there was no way to conceal the fact that I’ve been crying from my own mother. It didn’t matter because I don’t keep secrets from my mom. We had a good relationship so I never minded telling her anything.

“Mommm! Im backkk!” I yelled as I walked towards the kitchen where she usually was.

“I’m in the kitchen!”

“I know.” I responded.

I made my way over to the kitchen to see my mom reading the newspaper. She would usually be at work but today, she was off. My mom works at a nurse in the hospital.

“How was your day, honey?” She asked while doing the word search on the newspaper.

“Fantastic!” I answered with fake enthusiasm.

This made her look up and she gave me a stern look. “Elena Marie Scott. You know you can’t hide anything from me. Sit down and tell me everything. Were you crying?”

I opened my mouth to tell her about my day but before I could say anything, she cut me off. “Of course you were. Your eyes are red.”

“Mom,”

“Honey, did Liam make you upset-”

“No mom, he-”

And she continues talking like I never said anything. “because I would march over there right now and punch  him myself. Wait, that’s not very appropriate since-”

“MOM!”

“Yes?”

“Do you want to know about my day or not? It sounds like you don’t since you keep on talking and talking and talking.”

She chuckled sheepishly. “Sorry, I got a little carried away.”

“And no, it wasn’t Liam. In fact, he came to the rescue but before that,”

“AWW!” My mom loudly gushed. She did not sound like someone from her age from the way she squealed and gushed. “You guys are so cute. Why don’t you just get together already?”

I gave her a hard look so I think she got the message.

“Oops, sorry. Continue.”

“Anyway, no mom, me and Liam are not going to quote ‘get together’ because he’s my best friend. Not boyfriend. But about my day, it was horrible mom. I walk to school to find a note in my locker that has killer written on it. Then Liam cheers me up until after lunch when I get to literacy class. This new guy comes in and his seat is next to me. I try to introduce myself but he ignores me and starts giving me glares like he wants me to die or something. Then after, I find out that he has art with me and he continues to act like he hates me even though I didn’t do anything to him.”
