I jumped off our hill, accidentally spraying dirt all over Apollo. He jumped up, but I was already gone. I raced through the herd. Summer let out a cry, waking up the other horses. I ran until I was close enough to pounce. The mountain lion turned to me, my hooves thundering beneath my feet. I had all but seconds to think. To pounce on the lion or to shove Summer aside and take the hit.
I jumped! I jumped with all might, thrusting forward with my back feet. And I hit my target. The mountain lion screamed with pain. Apollo was quickly behind me, but couldn't do anything. I was on top of the lion, if he kicked, he could hit me. I started to stand when the lion jumped on my back, scratching my neck on the way up. I cried out with pain, but rolled over, shaking the mountain lion off. Then I reared up, and brought my hooves down onto him. It was over. He was finished.
