Ryan's POV

I was just about to serve someone when my boss called me into his office. I asked for someone to cover me at the bar and then followed my boss. Normally his a very jokey guy. Always a smile on his face. But something about him now seemed off. He seemed very serious all of a sudden. It worried me slightly.

"Take a seat Ryan." He told me. I took the seat across from him infront of his desk. He put both hands on his desk and stared at me for a  few minutes.

"What is it Mike?" I asked. Maybe he was ill? Or something happened to his wife? I knew she wasn't very well lately.

"I have some bad news to deliver." He said sadly. I saw him gulp. This was not going to be good.

"What is it?" I whispered, scared of what the answer may be. I wasn't good with dealing with bad news. I kind of go off the rails a bit. I'm guessing this was the reason Mike was so worried to tell me.

"Your mother passed away this morning." He said. I stared at him blankly. I was not expecting that. I haven't seem my mother in years. We had a massive argument years ago. I always assumed that one day we would make up but there was no chance of that now. She died hating me. She died without knowing that I really did love her.

"Ryan, you OK?" Mike asked. I shook my head. I couldn't form words. I just couldn't believe it. She wasn't even old. She was always healthy. I went to live with my father when I was about 13. I hadn't seen her since. We had the odd phone call but it always ended in me yelling at her.

I jumped out of the chair and walked to the bar. I heard Mike yell after me but I ignored him. There was only one thing that was going to make this go away.

Booze.
