THE BACK STORY!! :)

Chapter 20
I didn't know what to say. I quietly copied him. Thank god I was wearing sweatpants. This would be very uncomfortable in a skirt.
We walked in silence for a while longer while I took in what he had told me which, by the way, was very confusing. I did realize though that he was going to tell me the whole story, in his point of view, from when we were still friends.
To break the silence, and because my patience was running thin, I asked, "Where are we going?"
Nate chuckled, "You never had the patience to wait. I always had to tell you where we were going to get you to even sit in the car."
I huffed, "Old habits die hard I guess."
Nate gave me a sad smile, "There is nothing you ever need to change. Your perfect."
I felt a blush creep onto my cheek. "So will you tell me now?" I asked to change the topic.
"Tell you what?" Nate asked confused.
"Where we are going!" I answered, "And you would always space out like this."
"We are almost there, and I'm still the same. Just, before I used to say this stuff in my head, and now I can say it to you," He told me confusing me. Before I could ponder, he said, "We are here."
We broke out of the last line of trees to see a little beach. It wasn't very big, but it was completely empty. The waves hit a big boulder on the shore. The beach was completely hidden from all sides by the trees except the waterfront.
Nate led me to the boulder and with the use of the other rocks, climbed on it before holding his hand out for me. He settled me between his legs so that I was leaning on one leg with my legs over his other leg.
"Back to the story I guess," he told me, "I'm going to start at the beginning. We still used to be best friends. Those were the best days."
I smiled. I missed those days dearly. Life was so much easier. My only problem then was how to tell Nate that I love him. Nothing else. There was no Kyra, no Jake and no complications.
Nate's voice brought me out of my thoughts, "Freshmen year, our first year in high school, passed by in a blur. All that was ever going through my head was Jessalynn Mari Tate. All my attention was on you, football and baseball, and grades. No other girl, no one else. But then, every time you would call me your 'bestest friend ever' it started to hurt. I started to feel like I need to get my mind off of you."
I heard a gasp. It took a few seconds to realize it came from me. Nate was in his own world, or well, in our world from 10 years ago.
"By the end of sophomore year, I was 'the player' but you were always my first priority. I stopped all the guys from hitting on you, threatened everyone so that no one would ask you out, and if I could, I would've stopped them from even talking to you. I know it wasn't fair, but I could bear to see you with someone else.
"I never made a move, too scared to ruin our friendship, because I was sure you didn't feel for me like I did for you," Nate looked down at me then, and smiled before kissing my forehead.
I don't know what my face would have looked like at the moment. Shock probably, because that was what I was feeling.
Nate looked back to the water and continued, "Then came Kyra, she was hot I admit, and that was probably why I even noticed her. Even then though, you were always in my head. Kyra, like all the other girls, was just used to forget you, but she was like a freaking boomerang, I kept throwing her away, and she kept coming right back. At first, she was a..toy? She was a good lay. She was easy and stupid. But then, one day when we were, uh…"
Nate looked ashamed and I could tell why, "having sex," I supplied.
He looked away from me and nodded, "yeah, I ended up saying your name. After that, everything went downhill.
"She learnt, all too fast, that I was in love with you. She's not as dumb as I put her out to be. She figured me out. She knew why I wouldn't tell you. She made sure to tell me, everyday, that you only thought of me as a friend. She even went so far as to say that you had a crush on Tucker. I had seen you a few times with him. I mean, generally you were starting to get depressed, but Tucker would always cheer you up. Then there were times when I saw you guys hugging-"
I opened my mouth to object, but he cut in, "-I know. You were just friends. I know that, I knew that even then, somewhere deep down, but you've got to understand. I was confused, I listen to Kyra. I was so blinded."
I kissed his hand. I could tell he was beating himself up over it.
He smiled, and for the first time since we stepped onto the beach, the smile reached his eyes, "Slowly, I just got more and more terrified of telling you about my feelings because of her. She took advantage of that. Then she started to blackmail me. We started to 'date' but it was more of a freaking business deal, not for money though, well not until later anyway. The end of junior year came slowly, and I thought she would be bored of using me. I mean, she got that popularity, that title of 'taming the player' but she wasn't done.
"The entire summer passed by. There was actually a point were I had told her to go to hell. You remember that night that I came to your house. Now that I think about it, I must have looked extremely crazy right. I just hugged you for a good five minutes and as we were about to walk in, my phone buzzed and I ran out. It was such a small misunderstanding, that basically ruined everything."
A tear fell out of Nate's eyes onto a part of my shoulder that my shirt didn't cover. He quickly kissed it way.
We sat in silence for a few minutes. Soon enough though, the curiosity was killing me. I put my hand on Nate's cheek, pulling him out of his thoughts.
He held my hand there for a few seconds before letting go and jumping off the rock. Then he turned and helped me off before grabbing my hand again and tugging me towards the dry sand.
