Without You, But With Her

It was snowing, the soft white flakes falling from the sky and to the ground, covering the ground of the entire village. It was cold, one of the coldest winters Konohagakure had ever had and the few people wandering the streets were covered by thick, layered clothes to keep them warm during that cold morning. From house to house streams of smoke billowed out of chimneys to keep their occupants warm, no house without that smoke besides the ones without chimneys.

Except one.

A small house stood close to many others, it's chimney bare and if anyone had entered the house they would see a woman sitting on the floor in front of a portrait without even a long sleeve shirt on. She sat there, body shaking as she stared blankly at the picture without even noticing the cold.

Her thoughts wouldn't move from the man in the picture. She wouldn't move from her spot in front of the altar of her beloved.

And it wasn't until bells rung outside her house that her stupor was broken, and Yuhī Kurenai cried.

Sarutobi Mirai flipped backwards, shinobi sandal clad feet skidding against the ground and the young woman quickly brought one of her chakra blades up to block the frontal attack on her. Her other blade was hastily moved as well and she used it to pin against the back of the neck of her attacker, using the one in the other hand against the front of their neck.

In an instant she locked her red, single ringed eyes with the rogue and summoned a chakra infused rope with a single handsign in which that she easily wrapped around them, trapping the person who didn't even have time to notice what the young kunoichi was doing. Mirai's lips slowly turned up into a smile and, tucking the chakra blades one by one into their holsters connected to her attire, she knocked the rogue out with one swift punch to his jaw.

With a grunt leaving her she moved forwards and picked them up, throwing them over her shoulder in one swift movement before she turned around to face her current teammates. The oldest of her teammates – her team's leader – nodded in acceptance and he motioned his hands back towards the village they had gotten close to; Sunagakure.

"We should stay in Suna whilst we get out the information we need," he said, "we'll head back to Konoha tomorrow." Looking around at his team he watched as they nodded in agreement and his lips upturned at the compliance.

Mirai was in the centre of the group with the unconscious rogue over her shoulders as they made their way to Suna.

Her eyes were red. Not the natural red they normally were, but a bright red, the sign of crying. Slowly she moved her hands up and brushed them against the face, the tears soaking into her skin— skin which had grown extremely pale in the cold, yet she still had yet to notice.

With her hands then stained in tears Kurenai moved to get up from her kneeling position, legs wobbling like a newly born foals as she struggled to stand with her vision still blurred. It took a short while until she made her way into a full standing position and turned around to face the direction of her bedroom which was, conveniently, right next to the room she was in.

Stumbling forwards Kurenai made her way to her room leaving behind the picture, wrenching the door open with a harsh creak echoing through the empty house. Slowly making her way into the room she didn't go towards the bed, instead she made her way to the shelf that sat on the left wall with pathetic coughs emitting from her mouth.
