"They said this was a small skirmish" Clint grumbles.

Natasha kicks out sharply and fells a fully equipped Hydra agent.

   "Getting tired?"

Clint sighs "Sometimes I want to forget you exist."

Nat covers his blind side with her pistols "But then you remember that I save your hide in nearly all our fights."

"Not true" Clint adjusts his aim to target the driver of one of the Hydra trucks.

Nat deflects a bullet aimed at his ribs with her gauntlets "Really?"

"Don't be smug" Clint glowers.

Steve bounces his shield off a couple helmet heads, and dodges Hydra gunfire.

The attack is centered on a ground opening above the subway. Hydra has taken to terror attacks on local government buildings and public transportation.

The team had sufficient warning before Hydra could carry out their plan, but the subway still swarms with civilians.

"Somebody cover me!" Sam dives sideways and uses his body to block the stairs "Wrong way, people! This is for your own safety. Wanda, a little help?"

"Occupied!" She yells back.

The people leaving the trains grumble but Sam seems to have it under control.

The Hydra agents are very resilient. Unlike the typical foot soldiers, these are agile and fast. They get in a formation shooting in all directions. The rapid fire bullets are almost lost to Wanda, but with a flick of her wrist they reverse course.

"How is it going, Sam?" Cap asks.

"Uh, slow. We have a couple lookyloo's... And some fangirls."

"Fangirls?" Bucky grunts.

One by one, the members of the team glance over at the crowd of young girls shrieking and watching eagerly.

"I feel like a celebrity!" The team hears laughter in Sam's voice.

Natasha snorts "Good luck with them! I heard they volunteered to be Loki's army if he asked. Something about his hair"

"Focus, people" The Captain's voice is sharp.

"I'm not gonna even try to figure out that one" Tony echoes "Oh, fresh reinforcements from the south. The truck is shielded somehow, it's jamming my signal. Whoa, armor just took an electrical hit"

"EMP" Natasha confirms "Guys, the earpieces won't-"

The earpieces cut out as a semi plows through the street. Pedestrians scatter in all directions. Two of the police cars are overturned in the process.

Tony surges forward and looses altitude, suddenly.

"Wanda, catch Stark!" Steve yells.

Wanda sets her lips.

"The rest of you, neutralize the truck. Sam, I need the streets clear."

Sam groans, and swings into a horizontal turn "Working on it!"

The back door of the semi is thrown open and the team surges forward. One of the Hydra agents grabs the arm of a nearby civilian and drags her with him using her body as a shield.

"Cap!" Bucky yells "Get the girl. I'll cover you!"

Steve mutters something under his breath, and runs toward the scene. The agent presses the gun to the girls head and yells at the approaching figure "One more step and I'll cover the street with her brains."

Steve holds up his hand in a gesture of truce. The others gather in around him.

"Nat, that's Y/N!" The archers arm wavers as he turns to his teammate.

"Oh, crap!"

"Language" Tony rasps as Wanda gets him to his feet.

The agents grip is firm and the cold metal of the gun barrel ties your stomach in knots.

"{Captain America Issued Language}unbelievable" you moan.

The Avengers are easy enough to recognize, and you've already picked out Steve, in his bright blue and red uniform, with Nat flanking him, her eyes fiendish.

"What do you want?" The Captain's voice is calm.

One of the agents smirks "We are not children, Captain. Hydra doesn't bargain. We take!" The gun is jammed against your skull and your captor pulls the trigger.

Your heart is pounding in your ears, then everything is swallowed deafening silence and sharp pain.

Steve launches himself at you, and ground rises up and everything goes dark.

There is a sensation of weightlessness, and your body whirls like it's in a tumble dryer.

It takes you a second to realize that you're not dead and except for the new scratches on your arms, you're not in pain, either. But you can't see, and your hearing fades in and out. You take a deep breath, but you can't seem to get any air.

"Steve!" Your voice is muffled by his chest "You're crushing me!"

"Sorry. Sorry" His grip looses and you find yourself on top of him in the middle of the street.

You tumble to the concrete, flushing furiously, but Steve never wavers.

"You need to get out of here, ma'am" he orders, his jaw tight.

"But-"

His tone is no nonsense "Go. The fight isn't over!"
