05 "THE WARNING"

RACHEL'S VOICE CAME back every few days. She kept explaining that the day was becoming closer, and that if Adeline didn't warn them, many would soon to lose their lives. But, it didn't help Adeline. What exactly was going to happen that she needed to warn Harriet about? Adeline was finishing up for the day in the Gardens when her thoughts were invaded by a voice. But this time it wasn't Rachel's voice. It was a boy's voice, and the tone of his voice made it seem that he was distressed over something.

Adeline, this is your final warning. After today, everything will change.

Adeline became suddenly alarmed by the boys warning and stopped working. The boy's warning gave Adeline chills, goosebumps forming on her bare arms. On the opposite side of the Garden, Victoria seemed to notice her reaction and her eyebrows scrunched up in confusion. Adeline's heart sank, sensing something was wrong.

"Adeline?" Victoria sang. "Everything alright?"

"Something's not right." she muttered.

"Huh?" Victoria arched her eyebrow questioningly.

"Something is going to happen." she blurted out, causing Victoria to look alarmed at her words. A look of worry spread across Victoria's face. Victoria didn't say anything. Instead, she looked away, as if she was trying to ignore what Adeline just said. The sinking feeling lingered in Adeline's stomach, and worry spread through her. Rachel said something bad was going to happen, and the boy had said that everything will change after today. Curiousness overcame her.

What was going to happen really soon that would change everything?

Adeline and Victoria were seated at the table for dinner when Harriet joined them. The Mappers had just arrived back to the Sector a couple of minutes before dinner, and many were off showering or immediately heading to get dinner. It was becoming twilight, the sun starting to set slowly over the horizon. The feeling of dread and worry was still lingering in Adeline's stomach, preventing her from eating her dinner. Instead, she was absentmindedly staring down at tonight's meal that consisted of soup and bread, more playing around with her food than eating.

"Not hungry?" Harriet's voice interrupted her from her thoughts. Adeline's head jerked up at the sound of Harriet's voice, meeting her gaze.

"Hmm? Yeah?" She tried to sound as if she was certain, but it didn't sound convincing. The truth is, she was more worried than not — hungry.
