A shape in the void. A form hovering in the silent darkness. Then, a pulse of dim yellow light from within the shape, illuminating everything, revealing numeral digits zipping around. The flying digits flashed brilliantly as they came to contact with the pulse of energy, causing an almost rippling effect throughout the void. As the wave of light washed through the darkness, the shape's features were shown as being smooth and spherical. Another pulse came from within it, and another, again, and again. The waves of light came slow at first, but then quickened its pace, the entire void full of numbers flashing in a steady, almost rhythmic pattern. At each pulse, the yellow light became brighter and bolder, and the glowing ball began to take on a new shape. Lines and new curves were formed, until the vague form of a human boy appeared. More features spread across the curled up figure with every pulse of light, becoming detailed, and becoming brighter, until the entire void full of numbers became blown out, awash by the glare of the brilliant light. . .
And then it all ended; the silent void became pitch black once more, the hovering code unseen. This time was different, however—the code became very still, freezing in space, and the person was gone. The entity had been removed, and taken somewhere else. To a different dimension—to a different world.
And that world came rushing at him, hitting him with full force.
Sound. . .
Blaring noise raced past him, and other strange things shouted at each other.
Smell. . .
It was stinky, odors of rotting foods wafting through his nostrils.
Touch. . .
The ground was hard, stiff and cold where he lay, which he felt past something that hung loose over his skin. Something weighted gently squeezed around his feet and hands.
Taste. . .
Breath brought air to his mouth, and he could taste chemical fumes, along with the foul aroma of the rotting foods on his tongue.
Sight. . .
The boy opened his eyes for the first time.
Darkness and light filled the new space he was in. He slowly sat up on the ground, his newly awakened eyes absorbing the details around him, receiving his surroundings for the first time. Two walls. Behind him and in front of him. The walls stretched a very far ways to his left, but on his right was different. There was open space. That was where most of the sound was coming from. Large structures with round pieces rolling beneath them seemed to move them on a smooth gray path. The smell came from where he was, between the walls. Large canisters held the horrid smell. He looked up. It was all dark, tiny lights sprinkling the vast, black space, shining upon him from high above.
He didn't know where he was. Or what he was. Or, what anything was for that matter. His mind was empty. Fresh. New. Waiting.
A bright yellow orb of light appeared in front of him, hovering in midair. He stared at it, wondering what it was. His curiosity and wonder overcame him, and his hand reached out for it.
At first contact, there was a flash, blinding his newly found vision. He grimaced, and blinked it away, immediately disliking it; until something different happened. His eyes widened in shock.
Information.
He suddenly had knowledge.
There was something that was placed into his empty mind, filling the void within him. There were stories. There were characters. There were motives.
And there were rules.
The boy stood up, with a new understanding. A clear goal. And a purpose. He had to run. He had to move. 5... A clock began in his head. 4... Time was ticking for him. 3... And it was running out.
2...
1. . .
A flash overcame his body, and dissipated, yellow lights dancing and fading away. He looked around, and started running left, where the walls stretched out.
Yellow orbs of light appeared in front of him, making him pause. But he knew what these were now. He reached forward, and it disappeared into his body. A number popped into his head. He knew he had to keep moving. Keep running. Always running. He knew that he was being chased. They wanted to catch him.
Another thought popped into his head, not from the new information, but a thought made by himself. He looked forward into the distance, a whole new world opening up to him, his eyes flashing yellow like the floating orbs.
Game on.
