Chapter Eleven

"Both of you, please remain here."

The woman stopped for a moment, and pushed her thin glasses up on her nose.

"Jesse Collins and James Smith, please

come with me."

I had known this was the outcome. I just didn't believe it, I still couldn't.

No one moved. James stood behind me, his hand grasped onto my arm. Jesse glanced to Rex, who only shook his head in reply.

"Collins?"

He stood up, his legs shaking. I can't imagine how he managed to stand, let alone walk, but he did.

The woman's lips upturned in a forced smile. She placed a hand on Jesse's shoulder.

James grasp tightened.

"Just go James." Rex said, barley above a whisper.

His hands were clenched into fists, pressing against the wall. I remembered his talk with me, telling me that it would happened this way.

I reached behind myself, and pulled his hand off my arm and took it in my own. He looked up at me and nodded. He had known that it would end like this.

James let go of my hand before I could summon the courage to let go of his. With his head down, he took the final steps towards his fate.

That's when the gun fired.
