Prologue

Unknown POV

The moisture of the fog enveloped my skin as I made my evening rounds on this cold, empty night. Of course, it was always empty. Everything around here was empty. Despite the emptiness, I quite enjoyed it. The peaceful, brisk walks through the night, the chill in the air that always seemed to linger, and the travelers. The best part of the walk.
Travelers were unique beings. They were souls from the human realm, that occasionally made their way over to ours. It took a special type of person to do that, and although some of the humans actually believed they could develop the skill, it was only the chosen that could actually do it.

The reason being was that only the ones that could do it from birth had the ability to help the spirits move on. That's what travelers did, anyhow. They helped the spirits in this realm move on to the afterlife. Travelers, however, seemed to be dwindling as of late.
The darker spirits that inhabited this realm, if they could even be recognized as spirits, had been luring the travelers into leaving their realm, and while they were gone they'd manifest their bodies into their own.
It was a very pleasant process. Being one of those creatures, I very much enjoyed watching the life flee from their eyes while the darkness was engulfing their soul. When the manner was complete, the souls would have already finished their a one-way ticket to Hell. Once they got there, there was no coming back.
The sound of branches rustling and leaves crunching had suddenly caught my attention. Those weren't just any average spirit footsteps; those were human footsteps.
A dark smile plastered itself onto my face as I changed my intended route and halted behind a tree. I had found another one.
It was a girl from what I could tell. She was about 5'2 and facing away from me. With long, shining brown hair that flowed down her back in waves. She was facing a spirit, whispering something into its ear. The spirit nodded in acknowledgment, before she carefully leaned in, her lips barely touching his.
But then, something rather peculiar happened. Something I had never seen. It was normal for the spirits moving on to emit a faint, glowing purple aura. But the aura this one gave off was illuminating white radiation.

While I was gazing at it in awe, the light had somehow reached my skin, burning it in the process.

"Ow!" I leaped backward. I cradled my hand, so unfamiliar to the pain I had just been caused.
My thoughts were racing. Being immortal, almost nothing could harm or kill me. So why had it burnt me? Confusion muddled my features as I tried to make out what was happening. Although the light was almost blinding, I could very faintly see the soul seeping through the terrain. It was being sent to Hell.
I could feel a new sense of power coursing through my veins. Another spirit on our side. I felt drunk off the power it gave me. I felt reckless and more confident than ever.
I almost wanted to leave the girl, out of fear that she might've tried to injure me yet again once I would feast from her. But with the soul that we had just gained, I felt like anything was possible. Besides, I could knock her to Hell will one simple touch if I had wanted to.
I worked up the courage to raise from my crouching position. I was about to set off towards her, but she whipped her head around fast, in search of something it had seemed.

Just from that small turn, I had discovered what may have been my downfall. To put it lightly, she was the most gorgeous soul I had ever seen. My kind was not attracted to humans, nor heavenly creatures or anything of that sort. But this girl was different. Her long brown hair framed her face perfectly. She had bright blue, wide eyes with dark, long lashes accentuating them. Her perfectly arched brows outlined her face in just the right way, and her nose was perfectly shaped, petite and pointed. I had never seen a more gorgeous creature. She continued to look around, trying to find the culprit of her stalker. She eventually gave up and started towards her home, where she could return to her body and make her way back to her own realm. Normally I would have followed the traveler. But it was different this time. I couldn't find it within myself to kill her, let alone send her to Hell. One thing was for sure. She wasn't human. I had never seen a human graced with that kind of beauty before and I was certain that a human traveler couldn't send a spirit move a spirit along like she did. I needed to investigate further. Because even this puzzle was beyond me. I began heading home, slightly annoyed that I hadn't been able to feast off a traveler soul, but more curious about what that girl was. From the corner of my eye, I saw another traveler. He was a boy and he looked about 18. Seemed I was going to get a bite to eat tonight after all.

Authors Note:

I had started this already with multiple chapters already up, but the plot was going nowhere so I had to completely start from scratch again. But the plot line now is even stronger and in many ways better!

Hope you guys enjoy it!!!
