Chapter 4: Meeting the family

Depuis le début

Suddenly I'm woken by a phone ringing at what seems to be minutes later. Matteo is talking in Italian and he sounds angry about something. He hangs up before trying to move me.

"Where are you going?" I inquire sleepily.

"Work came up. Go back to sleep you're tired. I'll be back soon" he whispers. I nod before drifting back to sleep.

The sound of the alarm going off wakes me up. I groan turning it off as Matteo nuzzles my chest groaning. He rolls over letting me get up. Since today is Tuesday my morning classes are a little later than my Monday classes but I have three so that still sucks. Luckily I don't have to work. I get dressed in a lace black peplum  top, matching pencil skirt,  and nude flats. I style my curls into a half up half down combo with a bun. When I walk out the closet Matteo is putting on his slides. We walk out the room and out the penthouse. When we pull up to campus he stops me from getting out.

"Do you work tonight?" he asks.

"No" I reply eyeing him, "Why?"

"Family dinner."

"With your family?"

"Something like that." He pulls me closer kissing me. I kiss back before pulling away. I get out the car and he pulls off. Why is he inviting me to a family dinner? And what the heck did he mean by 'something like that'? It's either your family or not. There's no in-between when it comes to family.

The day seems to speed by and before I know it I'm getting into Matteo's car. He pulls off after kissing me softly. The ride is way longer than if we were going to the penthouse. After about forty-five minutes we pull up to a suburban home. It's cute two story single family home. I get out the car and Matteo grabs my hand leading us to the front door. He doesn't knock he just walks in. He quickly kicks off his shoes before placing them on a rack by the door. I quickly take off my flats and he puts them up as well. To the right is the living room decorated in warm neutral colors with a white marble fireplace. Matteo pulls me down the hall and I notice family portraits that include Carmine with a beautiful woman and two kids. This must be his house. We stop at the kitchen entryway. It's huge with an adjoining eating nook, the walls are a soft peach color with white cabinets, and granite countertops. There's an island and a bar, this place is a drastic change from Matteo's place. The smell of home cooked lasagna is like heaven to my nostrils. That's when I notice the olive tone woman in the kitchen. She has long cascading dark brown hair with a natural auburn tint to it. She smiles at me with both white teeth and blue eyes shining. She's the beauty from the portraits lining the hall walls. She rushes over pulling me into a hug catching me completely off guard with the embrace. I awkwardly hug her back before she pulls away holding me at arms length gazing over my whole body. That's when I notice that she's very pregnant.

"Danica this is Carmine's wife Giselle" Matteo introduces.

"Gosh you're prettier than what my Carm mentioned" she marvels with a grin.

"Thank you, you're gorgeous" I say.

She waves me off, "I'm a whale."

"A pretty whale" Carmine adds hugging her from behind.

She giggles, "Shut up."

There's a squeal followed by laughter as two bodies rush into the kitchen. One's a little girl with chestnut kinky curly hair down her shoulders with hazel eyes. The other is a little boy with blue eyes and a short hair cut. They look to be about seven and five, gosh they're gorgeous, this whole family is perfect.

"Guys speak to our guest Aunt Danica" Giselle states shocking me.

"Hi aunt Danica" they chorus before running over to Matteo hugging his legs. It's enough to make my heart melt into a puddle. He chuckles picking them both up and bouncing them around. Who knew he even liked kids? But why should I be surprised since I know nothing about the man. Why'd Giselle introduce me to them as aunt Danica? Is it because I'm currently being forced to date Matteo?

"Let's eat" Giselle announces clapping her hands. We all take seats at the table and Giselle says grace before we all dig in. She made lasagna paired with a side salad.

To say she was a great cook would be an understatement. It feels like it's been forever since I've had a home cooked meal. Don't get me wrong I can cook but most of the time between school and work I don't have the time or the energy to cook. Dinner is filled with me getting to know more about Giselle and the kids. Eva Rose and Junior are seven and five respectively. They currently attend some fancy private school that Giselle isn't sure she really likes. When dinner is over I'm actually sad to leave. I know more about Giselle and Carmine in one dinner than I know about Matteo. I'm forced into a relationship with someone who won't tell me anything about himself. How is that fair at all? We leave after I promise Giselle we'll hang out again. The ride back to the penthouse is a silent one. My mind just won't stop racing. Would I be able to have kids in the future with someone I love or am I forced to be unhappy with Matteo? Would I get to have my little family in a nice house? I want what Giselle and Carmine have, a happy loving relationship, something I think is unachievable with Matteo. But would he let me go in order to be happy? Hell no, if I'm not with him he'll probably kill me. I don't want to live my life in fear that if I do or say something out of line Matteo will kill me. Who wants to live their like like that? When we get into the penthouse I strip out of my clothes while he takes a shower. Once my night clothes are on I get into the bed letting my worries temporarily fade as I fall into unconsciousness.
