Leaves crunched as a man and a woman sprinted through a forest, moonlight peeking from between the trees. The man clutched a baby to his chest as he moved in tandem with his partner. From behind the duo were arrows that whizzed past their bodies, followed by shouts and an array of what could only be described of blinding lights. A particularly bright and colorful orb of energy flew over them and landed a couple of feet in their path.

As it collided with the ground, there was a massive explosion, to which the shockwave nearly sent the couple flying. With a loud cry of surprise, the woman almost stopped dead in her tracks, stunned by how close it was. "No!" The man placed an urgent hand on her before they took off running again, avoiding the projectiles coming from behind.

"Run, Virginia! Take the baby and run!" The man gently handed over the baby to the woman before he placed a kiss against her forehead. Then against the baby's. "I love you both so much." And with that, his eyes began to take on a golden color as his skin darkened. Before his wife's very eyes, fur sprouted all across his skin as his body shifted into that of a rather large dark brown wolf. With a snarl, he shot off toward their pursuers.

"Nathan!" screamed the woman, her tone reflecting that of someone laying eyes on their lover for the very last time.

Virginia then quickly composed herself – as best as she could – before continuing to sprint deeper into the forest, tears slipping from her face into the wind. There were more explosions and screaming in the distance, a sign of the carnage she was certain her husband was inflicting. Her breathing was ragged and quick as she moved, holding her baby as if he were her lifeline.

Eventually she found a small cove where she tucked herself in between rocks and foliage, wiping at her tears with one of her hands. Glancing down at her baby, the sight of him still asleep was enough to inspire more tears to well in her eyes. "You sleep so well, Nyseer." She whispered to him, placing a small peck against his forehead.

Unfortunately, she didn't have much time to say much else before the sound of footsteps began to arise around her. It sounded like there were quite a few and it didn't take much else for her to recognize that they were still being pursued. "Nathan must have.." She said quietly to herself as she looked back down to her baby, the expression on her face stricken with grief and impending loss.

As quickly, and quietly, as she could, Virginia began covering the entrance to the cove with more foliage. She placed her baby down on a wide stump that had been nearby afterward, taking in a few drawn out breaths in order to calm herself. Before she could speak, she'd suddenly realized that her baby had awakened, staring her down with almond irises.

"I'm so sorry, Nyseer," She spoke gently as he grabbed at her finger with his small hands, a small smile on his face at the sight of his mother, "Wolf or Human, nobody decides who you are but you. Don't fear anything, little cub. Make them fear you." Her breath caught in her throat as she stifled her tears, aware of what she had to do. With one final kiss to his forehead, she headed toward the hidden entrance of the cove.

"Mama loves you." And with a wave of her hand, she gently pushed through the foliage and was gone. For the first time that night, Nyseer wailed.

Sometime in the morning, a couple of figures found their way into the cove, discovering a still-crying Nyseer. As they picked him up, his crying began to die down and instead he found himself fast asleep. After a moment of silent deliberation between the cloaked figures, they whisked him away from the cove and to their village.

This was merely the beginning of the story of Nyseer Jackson, the Living Prophecy.
