I go by Onnie cause it's shorter
And to me a lot less obvious
At home my family
they call me Keeda
But in the real world

When I turned Sixteen
I needed money
I wrote Kiante on my resume
how funny
Out of work
Learned, nobody would call me back because of it
Ill tell you the truth like when I moved out of state
I worked late shifts at restaurants and stayed for extra pay
made some silly change but got
blinded by the game
now im Onnie on my resume
Was meant to be named after my brother
Everyone expected I was a boy
But they wrapped me up in pink and decided to keep the name for the girl
I probably end up
less self conscious
people wouldn't
stumble over my name
people wouldnt look at me like they expected to see someone else
But I got tired
of hating my name
I couldn't help that it's the first thing my mom gave to me
if people didn't like it that's on them cause I don't care

I write Kiante
and never put my nickname
Im known by Keeda and Onnie
Kiante will forever be my name.
I like the song in the mm and how she's been discriminated against for her "ghetto" name but still takes pride in it.
I feel it's empowering for all black girls with "ghetto names" that get made fun of in movies when they get used to name a character that is a horrible stereotype of what black people are like.
