As soon as you saw the forest, you wanted to turn back. You thought with a shiver back to what Toriel had warned you. They come. They leave. They die. You chewed on your bottom lip and turned back to the huge purple door. But there was no handle, and when you pushed with all of your might, it didn't budge. You pounded on it with the side of your fist in frustration, the sound ringing through the forest. You wrapped your arms around yourself and turned back towards the cold. There seemed to be only one way to continue on from here. A single, obvious trail led forward. To the right of it, the land dropped down in a cliff, the hillside covered in trees. To the left, more trees.
The trail seemed too likely to be a trap. You decisively took the few steps to the forest on your left, but something seemed... off. There seemed to be a sheen of something that looked like glass in between the first row of trees. Curious, you reached your hand out and touched at the shimmering air.
Your fingertips pressed against something cool, hard, and invisible. Like a wall, blocking you from entering the forest.
"What the hell," you whispered under your breath, which showed as frost in the air. You only now noticed how cold it was, and you shivered and pulled your hands into the sleeves of your jumper.
Resigning yourself to whatever was in store ahead, you continued forward on the trail. Each footprint stuck out in the snow like a sore thumb, and you grimaced at the thought of what could possibly see your trail and follow you... wherever you were going.
After a few minutes of walking and progressively getting colder and more suspicious of the quiet, you came across a long stick laying across the path. You raised an eyebrow suspiciously and glanced around, but you were still alone. Nothing around at all. With a deep breath, you stepped around the stick and kept walking.
A sharp snap sounded behind you, and you whipped around. The stick was split in half, broken like someone had stepped on it. Now trembling in fear, you turned again and hurried at a faster pace, aiming for the bridge up ahead with large wooden spikes set in front of it. The spaces between the spikes, however, were easily wide enough to slip through. You focused on it, and ran. You heard footsteps behind you, but only one or two.
Right before you could slip through one of the spaces between the spikes, something hard and strong gripped your wrist, and pulled you back. You cried out in fear, and struggled to see who - or what - had grabbed you.
The hand on your wrist felt unnaturally hard and sharp, like... bone. It forced your arm behind your back, which you felt pressing against your attacker. You tried to scream, to kick, to do anything to get away, but another hand clasped over your mouth, and the sight caused all of your movements to halt, and your eyes to widen.
"Humans," the skeleton purred in your ear, "are so rude. Don't you know how to greet a new pal?"
You felt tears pricking at the edges of your eyes, but you refused to show weakness in front of this monster. Yeah, you thought, I'd definitely take crazy goat lady and Stockholm syndrome over whatever the hell this is.
The skeletal hand moved from your mouth, the fingers trailing from your jaw down to your collar bone. "I'm Sans," he said. You could hear the sadistic grin in his voice, and you hoped and prayed that he wouldn't make you see his face. "Sans the- well, you already figured out what I am, hm?"
He pulled at your arm pinned behind your back, causing you to arch up in pain and remember your attempt to escape. You tried to wrench your arm away from him, but his bones only dug into your skin and tore at it when you pulled. You cried out, and he chuckled.
"What's your name, sweet cheeks?" You sneered at the pet name, and only replied with a quiet, "Let me go." You heard your voice break, and grimaced.
