Cassidy
I walk up the rigid, creaky stairs that once held family photos, disobeyed ball playing, dared races, and happiness, and down the silenced, long hallway that once came to life with laughter. I stop at my bedroom door that still had parts of ripped stickers attached to it from when I was seven.
I walk into the room and stop in front of my cracked mirror, acknowledging the bruises and scratches, both physically and emotionally. A present from Christina, the world's worse step mom.
She went on one of her daily rants earlier today on why the rules are important. To keep me safe. Little did she know she was inflicting the danger.
Ever since dad left her sorry ass, she's been blaming me for not supporting this family, for causing the divorce, for everything. I lift up my shirt to see the injuries and began counting them.
Twelve. New record.
I clean up my scratches and prepare for my five minute shower. The short period of time allows me a comfortable silence by myself. Nothing but water pelting the shower walls.
Once I'm out the shower I grab a few clothes to get dressed in and dry off. I hear a knock on my door just as I pulled my shirt down over my head. The loud bang made me flinch out of fear.
My evil step mother walks in just as I put my jeans on. My life is practically like Cinderella's. Sadly, this is another Cinderella story with a broken girl and no happily ever after.
"Cassidy, use this to cover your bruises tomorrow, " she says, throwing the cheap makeup down on my mattress that sat on the floor.
"Yes, ma'am." I say with an emotionless face. She forces me to say ma'am or else I get twice the punishment. She's not worthy of a title of respect. She's not even worthy of the brunette tracks in her hair, that aren't even the same shade of brown as her natural hair.
"And you better do a good job this time, the last thing we need is suspicion, right, darling?" She said while giving me her infamous fake smile, walking out the door in the process. "Right," I mumbled even though she was long down the hallway to her beautiful master bedroom.
I lay on the mattress, hoping that someway, somehow, I cpuld grow wings and fly a long distance away from here. I just want to leave this dreaded household. This is no home. A home is a place for love to always be evident when you walk through the door. Not a place to be welcomed by a slap across the face, just for even being alive. A home is a place where you should be eager to walk through that door and tell your family about your wonderful day at school. Not a place where you should be fearing what kind of punishment you get that day, just because you gave a look that seemed like even the slightest bit of attitude.
I close my eyes, dreading the thought of what tomorrow brings, letting a single tear slide down my blue, bruised cheek.
Tomorrow is just one day closer to leaving, one day closer to finally being free. I tell myself just before I drift off into yet another place that isn't home.

I wake up, put makeup on, and hurriedly get dressed. I have no time for a shower since Christina didn't bother waking me. I run downstairs and began to walk to school.
"Cass-" I interrupted her speech by slamming the door shut. I was in for it tonight but as of right now, I needes to make sure I got to school on time. Being late would result in an even worse punishment. Walking down the cracked sidewalk, I admire the scenery of the lost pebbles, the cracked cement, even the way the green leaves dance in the wind.
