Part 5: The last chance

"Explain." He said emotionless.

I felt my hands grow sweaty, and I had to move away from Zach and Kyle. We stood in a triangle form in the grass.

"Last night Melissa came to my bedroom," I explained, "and she said that she was going to kill Kyle."

"Wait, last night?" Kyle asked, all bitterness and anger lost in his tone, "I was with you last night. How could she have arrived then?"

"It was after you left," I said sheepishly, "it was about six in the morning."

He looked shocked, and I was surprised that he didn't say something like 'well you should have called me' or 'you could have ran', instead, he actually looked...concerned. Something I saw a lot, but something I definitely did not expect now.

"Continue," Zach nudged, putting me back into the story.

"She threatened to kill Kyle, which I refused to happen of course," I gave Kyle a look, "and..."

"Refused what?" Zach asked as he furrowed his eyebrows, "hold on a minute. Jessica, what was the threat?"

I froze, stopping mid-sentence as I realised that Zach had found the ultimate question.

This was it. This was the time that Kyle should forgive me, realise that none of this is my fault, and everything would go back to the way it used to be before Melissa showed up. He would realise that none of his pain was by my choice, and I that I loved him more than anything in the world right now.

But what if he didn't? What if he just got more mad thinking how I could have done such a thing to him? Or why I did it? Maybe he wouldn't forgive me, and I he would continue to hate me like he had been doing the past couple of hours. He might still return to heaven and leave me...

I looked down to the ground, watching my shuffling feet as they reminded me of Kyle's before he revealed himself. I almost smiled at the thought.

I looked up to the two boys' desperately concentrated stares, and took a well needed breath.

Here goes.

"It was...to break up with Kyle." I whispered.

The silence afterwards was deafening.

I slowly looked at Zach first, then Kyle, seeing that he was surprised again. His blue eyes were perfectly oval, and his pupils were shrinking with the strain of his eyelids being pulled upwards towards his eyebrows.

"And she said she would kill him if I didn't. So...she made me break up with Kyle. As in, planted the words that she wanted me to say into my mouth. She did some kind of magic to engrave the words into my mind, so I didn't even get a say of how I would do it. Or explain it."

The boys still said nothing. Sighing, I continued.

"Then she said I couldn't tell anyone about the threat and she would be around...watching me...to make sure that I didn't. She also said I would get a 'surprise' every time I tried to-"

"Break the spell." Zach gritted his teeth. "What an old trick! The pain in your sides...your grunting...that was her. It became worse once Kyle showed up at school this morning."

I nodded in agreement. Of course it was her. I didn't get those pains normally.

"You guys kept asking me what was wrong...and I couldn't put up with the pain anymore so that was when I asked if I could talk to Kyle. When...we came here." I looked around sadly and spotted the gate I had refused to climb in the distance.
