He raised an eyebrow as I walked through the gate and let go of his hand, hearing his footfalls behind me before he appeared beside my shoulder.
"Man, something must be really wrong if you don't even want to climb the fence," he teased. I shrugged slightly with no spoken response as I walked further into the field grudgingly. Kyle stopped me.
He held onto my shoulders and trailed his hands down my arms slowly until they reached my hands. His blue eyes were speaking with worry as he looked into mine. "Jessica please, tell me what's wrong. You're not acting the way you normally are."
I gulped nervously and looked at his eyes pleadingly. I didn't want to end this. Us. I couldn't, not after everything we've been through. It just hurt so much...
"I don't know where to start," I trembled as I felt my eyes become misty.
"You know you can tell me anything," he replied, "no matter what."
"That's not the problem," I sighed, freezing suddenly as I saw a fading figure of Melissa start to appear right behind Kyle. She put her arms and her chin on his shoulders causally, looking up at him with pitying puppy dog eyes. I tensed nervously.
Could he feel her? Surely if they were both angels- or rather, immortal, because I don't consider Melissa an angel- they could make contact?
I watched for some kind of reaction from Kyle, to find that he was only looking at me intently. I watched Melissa as she draped herself over him, running her fingers through his hair.
"You make a cute couple," she shrugged, "too bad it had to end so soon."
I felt an agonising pain strike into my chest, a final blow to make me fall to the ground and scream. It was like she was crushing all the bones in my rib cage, as if she wanted to try and destroy my internal organs.
"Jessica!" Kyle exclaimed as he bent down beside me, holding onto my hand with his smouldering eyes. "Tell me what's wrong!"
"Kyle, I can't do this anymore!" I gasped as I felt the pain pull back slightly, giving me more room to breathe.
"Do what?" he asked, his knuckles going white for holding onto my hand so tightly.
"U-Us," I mumbled, "I can't..."
"We need to get you checked out," he announced, getting ready to pick me up as he ignored my 'confession'.
"I'm being serious," I said as I held my hands up to him, pushing him away. "I-I want you to go back to heaven."
He paused his movements and furrowed his eyebrows at me. "Why?"
"Because..."
I felt the same pain from before enter my system. "Because we both knew that this wouldn't last!" I screamed painfully, hoping that it was loud enough for Melissa to hear.
"What are you talking about?" he asked, "why are you thinking like this?"
"You need to go back to serve your time in imprisonment," I replied, looking up at his concerned face. "I can't keep waiting everyday for the gods to take you away from me."
"I told you that they said they would hold if off," he said gently, "why would you send me back willingly?"
I sighed and blinked back the fresh tears as the next words already formed in my mind. They were making their way down to my vocal cords without control.
"It's...It's all been..."
I grunted as Melissa pushed her power harder into me, forcing me to get on with it.
