Chapter 2
The melodious alarm on her phone went off at exactly six in the morning, giving her just enough time to bath, get changed, make her bed and choose out the clothes Lottie would wear to school that day. Then at seven o'clock she would wake Lottie up and make her usual breakfast, Rice Krispies for Lottie and a cup of tea followed by two slices of buttered toast for herself.
Now having dropped Lottie off at primary school, Emma made her way to her workplace, automatically bringing back memories of the night prior to her head. Shaking them away, she stepped out of her car and quickly made her way into the building since she was already seven minutes late for work.
Emma and Steven both worked as highly paid business administrative assistances in their field of work, however they reported to different managers since they worked in different sectors.
Everyone however reported to a middle aged man, that went by the name of Mr Plier. A kindly man who was also known for being incredibly naïve, he was the boss at where both Emma and Steven worked.
With dark receding hair and warm welcoming brown eyes Mr Plier quickly became a father like figure to Emma, to whom she could always talk to, and though it was wrong Mr Plier could not deny that he too thought of Emma as a daughter and was quick to play favourites, slowly teaching her the ways of the business and being a boss, along with occasionally playing with Lottie whenever he came over to their house.
Despite all of this, Mr Plier wasn't as close to Steven as he was to Emma, this being because, though Steven was an efficient worker who got the results he needed, Mr Plier had heard about everything that Steven had said to Emma from Emma herself, which greatly changed his view on the man.
Walking warily into the offices Emma kept her head down as she navigated herself down the spacious office hallway, afraid that she might bump into Steven and have to face his ice cold glare and harsh words.
Finally reaching her big glass office, Emma dropped her navy blue bag onto her black swivel desk chair. Sighing she stood by the huge window that took up her wall and looked down at the streets and buildings at the bottom, finding it strangely calming to watch people get on with their lives along with the bright summer sun casting down reflecting off the windows of other buildings.
Catching her reflection in the mirror Emma, assessed her outfit from head to toe, a habit she'd catch herself doing whenever she was in front of mirrors or windows.
Her black suit dress looked presentable enough paired with her deep navy blue heels. Her shoulder length blonde hair looked much better than it did yesterday as said by Lottie on their way to school. However, she didn't feel any better from yesterday's palaver.
A sudden sharp knock resonating on her office door awoke her from her short daydreaming. Spinning on her heels she faced her body towards the source of the sound and came face to face with Steven, the one man she'd dreaded seeing today.
"Mr Plier wishes to see us in 10 minutes for the news on the new position he's offering." He said his mouth in a constant straight line, eyes trained on Emma angrily, before he turned around and started making his way to the door.
When he finally reached the door he stopped and remarked over his shoulder.
"Oh! And do try not to be late, such irresponsibility on your part may lead some to perceive you as almost immature or not fitted to work here."
"And we wouldn't want that now, would we?" He smirked turning the top half of his body to look at Emma with an evil smile leering on his lips, as he started walking out the office again.
With her door now firmly shut, Emma slumped ungracefully onto her plush black sofa situated in the far right corner of her office, though an unorthodox thing to have in an office, Mr Plier insisted in Emma having one to relax on after a busy day, and with all the relief it gave her who was she to argue with him.
The dark blue walls of her office shone from the light cascading in from the huge window, once again calming her nervous state, allowing her to fall back into the sofa comfortably and think about all the things going on in her life that lead up to this moment.
Originally working as an PA for another firm, Emma was repositioned here after she was promoted. The position was wonderful in her opinion, work was closer to home, the pay was better and not only that but she'd get to work alongside her husband, who she thought would be ecstatic with her news. Instead he was furious claiming that her need to be with him twenty-four-seven stemmed from her needy female behaviour, resulting in them fighting. However, this blew over after the first couple months of working together. Skip two years later and once again they're back to fighting only this time over a silly promotion. Three months ago Mr Plier offered both Emma and Steven along with two other people the position of executive head. The position was anyone's, the only rule being that Mr Plier had to see you work hard for it, pushing the limits of your capabilities along with using your initiative. With only so much an Administrative assistant could do, Emma was still excited and honoured to have been considered such a role considering she'd only been working there for two years but was nonetheless driven to prove herself. On the other hand, whilst Emma was overjoyed, Steven was furious that his wife too had been offered, and resented the idea of her having a position higher than him, thus leading him to demanding that she give up the position and tell Mr Plier that he would be the better choice. This was met with a hard no from his wife to which he shouted and berated his wife, not before drinking to cool off his anger, which ironically only made him angrier.
For three months this went on and every time Emma told herself tomorrow would be a new day, a better day. And every day she was wrong.
After seven minutes of some light work, Emma put her computer to sleep, and started walking down the empty hall towards the lift to take her to the meeting room.
On the way there she couldn't shake the feeling that she was being followed, but thought nothing of it. That was until she felt a cold arm wrapping it way around her waist and another clasping over her mouth.
"Hello Emma."
