1 When the light beam is directed at angle to the glass block, it is refracted (Figure 1.22).

2 When the light beam is directed vertically at the glass block, it is not refracted (Figure 1.23).

Conclusion

Light is refracted when it travels at an angle from one medium of a certain density to another medium of a different density.

1 The pond appears to be shallower than it really is.
(a) Light from the bottom of the pond is refracted away from the normal. This happens when light emerges from the water into the air because light travels faster in air than in water.
(b) The refracted light enters the eye of the observer. The observer sees an image of the 'bottom of the pond' somewhere above the pond's bottom.
(c) So, the pond appears to be shallower than it really is (Figure 1.24).

2 (a) In Figure 1.25, the drinking straw in the glass of water appears to be bent.
(b) When light from the straw travels from the water to the air, light is refracted away from the normal.
(c) The light enters the eye of the observer. The observer sees the image of the straw somewhere above the bottom of the glass.
(d) Thus, the straw appears bent

3 The dispersion of white light into its seven component colours of the rainbow is a phenomenon of light refraction.

4 Light refraction allows images to be formed on the retina of the eye. 

5 Lenses that refract light are used as magnifying glasses and in telescopes, microscopes and spectacles.
