[2007]
CINCINNATI, OHIO
. . .

Mark's bike parked in front of the hectic house. He brushed himself off to make a presentable appearance. He ran his fingers through his black and silky hair. He sharply inhaled as he grasped the bouquet of flowers in his hand. "Okay, Mark. This is it," he incoherently mumbled to himself.

He strode inside the house, having a clear perspective on the party. All he could see are either drunk or high teenagers going reckless. He saw his friends that appear to be sober—Sean and Felix.

"Mark!" Sean greeted as he had a red solo cup on one hand, clasping Mark's shoulder with the other hand. "Can you believe it?" he says as his eyes gleam with innocence, "We've graduated high school!"

"Can't believe it at all," Mark smugly replied, a smirk etching it's way onto his lips. He turned to face both Sean and Felix. "I'm shocked you both are sober," he says with a soft chuckle.

Felix scoffed. "You shouldn't be. The people here are goddamn crazy."

Mark shrugged as he turned to face the ruthless graduates. "Yeah, you're right."

"So?" Sean asked Mark, lifting a brow. "Are you asking her to be your girlfriend today?" he inquires as Felix nudges Mark's elbow teasingly.

Mark holds up the flowers. "You know it." His expression soon portrays worry and anxiety immediately. "But... I'm positive she'll reject me. I mean—I'm not the most popular."

"Popularity stands for nothing when it comes to Caitlin," Sean states. "She's not one to label."

Mark sighs in disappointment. "I know, but—still. Just because she doesn't say it doesn't mean she doesn't think it."

"Now's no time to be a Negative Ned. Go get her!" pushes Sean, as he shoved Mark near Caitlin.

Caitlin turns around. "Mark!" she squeals as a beaming smile tugs on her lips.

"Hey, Caitlin," he greets as he hides the flowers behind his back.

Caitlin pulls him in for a hug. "How have you been? Can you believe we graduated?"

"I'm doing good," he smiles. "And no, I can't believe it."

"I know right? Me neither!" she smiled even wider, if that was even possible.

"Yeah," he said. A small awkward pause triggered between the two. "So, Caitlin, I wanted to—"

"Mark, I want you to meet somebody," Caitlin announces with a smile still plastered on her face. An incredible-looking guy strides in as he smoothly wraps his arm around her. "My boyfriend!"

"It's a pleasure to meet you," Caitlin's boyfriend sticks out his hand for Mark to shake. "I've heard a lot about you," he added.

"Oh my God," Felix mumbled. Him and Sean scurried along elsewhere.

Mark's eyes pierces into the boy's eyes. Caitlin's boyfriend awkwardly purses his lips and clears his throat. He puts his offered hand down. "O-kay. Not so friendly."

"Mark?" Caitlin calls, her eyes portraying confusion. Mark breaks out of his trance, now focusing on Caitlin. "Sorry. I—I have to go."

Mark turns around to leave, but Caitlin grabs his wrist. "Wait—Mark? What's wrong? Is everything okay?"

Mark turns around again, leaving little space between Caitlin and him. "I—" he pulled out the bouquet and started fiddling with the flowers. "I kind of like you. I was gonna ask you out."

Caitlin's expression shifted into pity. "Oh my gosh, I'm sorry... but you're my best friend, Mark. I don't want anything to harm our friendship. I value it."

"I see that now," Mark answered, glaring at her boyfriend.

"Can we still be friends?" Caitlin bit her lip, hoping for a positive answer.

"Yeah," Mark said, dropping the flowers onto the floor. Soon enough, the wild teenagers has already destroyed it. "Just friends."
