Chapter Eleven

|| He went to hit Keith, but the cake caught Alyssa instead ||

James

Her lips touch mine with a small bit of hesitancy, and then it’s done. The distance has been erased, and we’re kissing. There is an urgency in our movements, and we know that this will change the dimensions of our friendship forever.

Tuesday Morning

I wake up in the morning to a pounding head and to a deafening alarm clock. That very clock tells me it’s just past eight thirty and I shoot out of bed. I run to have a shower before dressing myself hastily.

It’s Tuesday, and Alyssa had threatened to chop my balls if I was late to practice again. Apparently, that girl is some sort of terrifying perfectionist. Yesterday, when I strolled into practice six minutes late, she yelled at me for fifteen minutes about, time, punctuality and something else.

I stopped listening after the first thirty seconds.

She told me if I came late again she’d chop of my balls, or worse complain to Ma. I shudder, even thinking about her.

Practice for the singing fest begins at nine thirty every day and it takes me forty minutes to reach college from home. To my horror, as I stuff the boiled egg in my mouth, it’s already eight forty-five.

Fuck.

I push my way through the first train I manage to board and do the same when I reach college. Exhausted and panting from running the whole way, I reach the band room at exactly nine thirty two.

Elita, Alan and Alyssa are waiting expectantly for me. Alyssa is tapping her foot impatiently.

I hurriedly start, “Mrs. Jones met me and was telling me about something.”

Mrs. Jones was our Math teacher, and no, she did not meet me. But, seriously, Alyssa looks terrifying now.

“James, I told you yesterday that you have to be on time. We barely get time to practice with you as it is. What with your football practice and OA, you’re perpetually busy.” She grinds out, turning angrier by the second.

“Sorry, sorry! I’ll be on time tomorrow, I promise. I have Football practice at seven anyway, so I’ll be in college.” I try to pacify her.

Thankfully, she accepts my apology graciously and moves on to start practice. That’s one quality of hers I really admire. The ability to forgive, forget and move on.

I dump my bag on the floor next to the others and walk up to stand next to Alan. Alan is our drummer, Elita, our keyboard player since we were not using a piano, Alyssa as our bass guitarist.

I was the only male singer and Alyssa would join me with the vocals. Right now, Elita and Alyssa are discussing about the songs we are going to sing at the Fest.

“I think we should sing ‘Paradise’ by Coldplay and fuse it with some other song.” Alyssa suggests putting the tip of the pencil she was holding in her mouth. Her lips seems so soft, I wonder how it would be like to kiss them.

Fuck. I shake my head and try to clear out those disturbing thoughts. For a moment there, my male hormones almost took over my body.

I turn towards Alan, and ask him, “What do you think we should do?”

Alan is the only one in first year among us. He studies science, just like Arjun. Alan was an introvert, and did not speak to people unless he was spoken to. But, when he did speak there was a lot of weight to his words. And, the guy had a mean talent of playing the drums. It was almost as though the sticks were extensions of his hand.
