I had been missing something for a couple of weeks, but I eventually realized what: the birds. The vernal equinox passed more than a month ago, but I have not heard one bird. Not one call, cry, chirp, peep, or song.
For that matter, I haven't even seen a bird in a couple of weeks. It's eerie that I haven't realized it until now.
In some ways it makes sense because there is always music playing in the city, but in the countryside, the people want to maintain the 'naturalness' of it. With the extent and importance of nature in our world, conservation and helping the animal kingdom to maintain the ecosystem has been one of our top priorities.
But no birds? There was something wrong.
