Chapter Eighteen - Never-Ending

Harleen was sitting in the waiting room of the hospital, she was still unaware who she was here for

"Dr. Quinzel?"

She shot up "Yes that's me", she said as she push a piece of blonde hair behind her ear

"Hello, if you'd like to come this way",

Harleen followed the older doctor down a dimly lit hallway, "So, I was told that this patient had my card?"

"Yes, he was brought in badly beaten up, we have been told by GCPD to keep it quiet for a while but when we found your card"

"You decided it was best to call me? Against the GCPD?" Harleen questioned, still concerned about who was at the end of what seemed to be a never ending hallway

"Well the poor man has suffered so much, his in a coma and his under care of the state so if it comes to it they will pull the plug" the doctor shook her head and stopped walking, Harleen realised they had reached the end of that never ending hallway. The doctor began to open the door and Harleen placed her hands on each other as she walked into the room. All she could she was a man laying a hospital bed, surrounded by wires and tubes, the sounds of beeping bounced around the room. Harleen could definitely see the severity of the mans injuries, his face was badly broken he was covered in bloody bandages, also the sounds of the machines weren't making him seem any better.

"Come take a seat here" a nurse pulled a seat to the side of the bed, Harleen sat down her eyes still fixated on the man in the bed, she tried to see past his bruises and swollen flesh but there was nothing.

"Besides your card these are the only belongs he had on him" the doctor handed her a paper bag, she took each item out one by one, she pulled out an empty wallet, a pair of broken sunglasses all normal items but the last item sent chills down her spine and goosebumps up her arms, she forgot how to breath, her heart went into overdrive and her brain just stopped. It was her engagement ring, the ring that Guy had given her, a sign of his "undying love" for her was sitting in the palm of her hand. As her breath came back and her heart began to form a normal rhythm, she stared at the ring in her hand then at the man lying on the bed and she still could not see through the bruises and broken bones. Harleen jumped when she felt a hand touch her shoulder

"Dr. Quinzel? Does any of this mean anything to you?"

Harleen closed her hand gripping the ring tightly in her fist, she held back tears, she was remembering everything Guy had done to her, before she could think the words came out, " No, nothing I don't know this person". Harleen left that hospital room for another walk down the never ending hallway.

Harleen was trying not to cry but there were still tears that broke free as she her car home, in the seat next to her, her phone vibrated and rang it was her work but she was not in the mood to deal with another drama. Her phone rang from the hospital to her apartment as she turned the key in her apartment door, and walked in her phone rang again and she threw it onto the kitchen bench but it kept ringing, she wasn't going to deal with that so she walked into her bedroom, pulled a pill bottle and downed a couple before failing onto her bed.

After a sleep full of dreams that could only have been written by Stephen King, Harleen woke up inside her dark room, she could feeling a presence, like someone was watching her. She quickly turned her bedside lamp on to see non other than The Batman standing at the foot of her bed near her window

"What are you doing here" she pulled the covers over herself

"He was here wasn't he Dr. Quinzel" Batman said of more of a statement than a question

She stood up to face him "Get out" she knew exactly what he was talking about

"Harleen, this is serious Joker isn't just another patient his a dangerous man" Batman grabbed her shoulders "don't play games with him Harleen"

"Leave" Harleen said sternly, and so he did leave.

She knew Joker was dangerous but she wasn't stupid, she found an upper hand, in the time she spent trying to get him released from isolation she remembered two names that her patient had said

"Jack Napier & Jeannie"
