Chapter 9: I Will Bring Her Back.

Start from the beginning

"Hey Reed," She whispered.

"Hey Celia. Just letting you know that you can go home now. I hope Cami wasn't too much trouble for you," Reed said, as the girl stood up in front of him.

"Nope, not at all. In fact, she is seriously the perfect child. You have raised her really well, Reed," The young woman said, as she pulled her shoulder bag on.

"Well, I try," Reed joked, which caused the girl to giggle.

"I'll see you later," Celia said to him.

"All right," Reed said, as he lightly pulled the girl into a hug. "Be safe and have a good night."

The young woman smiled her white teeth and made her way to the front doors.

Reed watched her leave and then looked back down at Cami. She lifted her arms in the air and Reed reached down for her. He cradled her in his arms and then picked up the T.V. remote from the couch. He flipped the television off and then held the small bundle close to his chest. She flicked her eyes a few times and he kissed her forehead.

They walked into her pink and green bedroom and Reed laid her down on her bed. He walked over to her white drawers and opened the top drawer. He pulled out the purple-footy pajamas and walked back over to the small girl, that was now drooping her head.

Reed began to undress the small girl and then lifted her body up. He placed the pajamas on to her small frame and then grasped her hand. He helped her down, off of her bed, and they walked over to her little bathroom. Reed picked her up and set her feet down upon the foot stool, that was in front of the tall bathroom sink. He turned on the water and held the pink toothbrush under the sink. He grasped on to the child-safe toothpaste and squeezed a small amount on to the brush. He handed the brush to Cami and she began to brush her small teeth.

She spit out the used toothpaste and then Reed handed her a shot of water. She slurped it up and then spit it out.

Reed turned off the sink and then picked her up, again. He walked them back into her bedroom and he pulled back the pink and white comforter. He laid the small girl down and then tucked her into the bed.

She blinked up at him and he sat down on the edge of the toddler bed. He rubbed her forehead and then kissed it, lightly.

"Sweet dreams, angel," He whispered.

She said nothing back and then he rose from her bed. He flipped on her butterfly nightlight and then flipped off the over-head light.

The young girl turned on her side, not wanting to fall asleep.

Reed laid in his bed. He had his body halfway covered by the cream-colored comforter and then a laptop on his legs. He held a paper in his hand and was examining it with his square-rimmed glasses.

He sat in silence until he heard the small thuds of little feet tiptoeing down the hallway, towards his room.

He could hear a body stop right in front of his door. He didn't look up from his work and spoke,

"Camison Hensworth, there had better be a very good reason, why you are up this late."

Cami scampered over to her brother. She gazed up at him and then said, softly,

"I-I had a nightmare." She looked down at the floor and Reed let out a caring sigh. He removed his glasses and set his computer to the side.

"Come here," He said, as he pulled the girl up on to his lap. "What was your nightmare about, sweetie?"

"It was about Sammi," Cami began. "S-she never wanted to come home and she said she hated me."

"Sweetie," Reed said, as he held the girl's small hands. "She is going to come home, trust me. And you know she loves you to death."

"B-but what if she doesn't, Reedy? What if she gets lost when she tries to find our house. What if she never wants to be my sissy anymore?" Cami said, as she buried herself into her brother's grey, v-neck t-shirt.

"Never, ever say that, honey. She is going to come home and she won't be alone," Reed cooed to the little girl.

"Who is going to be with her?" Cami asked her older brother.

"Some very nice people that I sent to find and bring her home, okay? They will take great care of her and she will be back before you know it," Reed whispered to the now, excited girl.

"Really? She will? That's amazing," The little girl slurred. "But, what if-"

"Shh. Now, remember it is past your bedtime," Reed whispered to the child.

"But, I don't wanna sleep in my room. What if I have the nightmares again?" Cami said, as she almost began to cry.

Reed held her close and rocked her back and forth.

"You can stay in here with me, if you want," Reed said down to her.

"O-okay," Cami said, as Reed set her down again.

"Just give me one second, okay, princess?"

"Okay, Reedy."

Reed walked across the cold, wooden floor into his bathroom. He brushed his teeth and washed his face, quickly. He hurriedly walked back into his room and cleared his bed of the papers and his laptop. He pulled back all of the comforter and then walked over to his light switch. He pushed it down and then walked back over to Cami. He scooped her up and then he laid down into his queen-sized bed.

Cami fidgeted in the young man's arms,

"Reedy?"

"Yes, cutie?" He whispered down.

"I want my sissy back," She said, as she finally settled in her place.

"I know, sweetie. I do, too. And I promise you..I will bring her back," He whispered, as the small girl began to fall asleep as did he.
