I cycled down the busy streets of London, black hair whipping behind me in the wind. I missed this feeling all summer. Racing through the congested streets, nimble and quick. It was the first day back to school from the summer holidays, and I mainly walked everywhere in the summer.

My school uniform, which was a navy blue jumper, a light blue shirt and black trousers, felt comfortable against the early autumn sun.

An explosion shocked me and I nearly fell off my bike. I looked to the skies and found what I was looking for. A boy soaring away as the sky lit up orange and red behind him. The sky soon cleared and the morning traffic continued. Just another normal day in a world filled with superheroes.

"Alexandra, late on the first day back!"

"There was an explosion that pushed me off my bike," I sighed.

My teacher pursed her lips but relented. "Fine. The one with Tidal Wave?"

I nodded. Mrs Millar wrote it down on a late slip as I sat down.

At Silver Creek Secondary, they accepted that the excuse, a super villain destroyed my homework, could be true. Some abuse that, but I know of several people whom this has actually happened to.

I sidled into my seat next to my best friend, Jennifer Garrison. Jennifer is one of the few people I actually trust at this school, and I trust a great deal more than I probably should. Someone once called us the dynamic duo, but I stared at him till he left us alone. Her fiery hair has made her impossible to miss, an attribute that I'm incredibly glad that I don't have. Sometimes, it can help obscure me as everyone's looking at Jennifer.

"What did I miss?" I whispered to her.

"The chuckle brothers over there have already got a detention, and that's about it." She replied.

"Chuckle brothers?"

"New students. James and Matthew, I think."

"What did they do?"

"Something annoying. I don't really know. Or care."

I snorted in response as the morning bell rang.

I slammed my locker shut.

 "Whoa. Someone's angry." Jennifer noted.

"I'm not angry. Just ugh. I forgot how annoying everyone can be. Being home alone was the best part of the summer holidays." My words were true. My parents were constantly on work-related expeditions and my sister... well she doesn't count. Being around her isn't as trying as other people.

Jen grinned at me. "I get the feeling. Hey, have you seen the cute new guy?"

"No. Who is he?"

"Aiden something. He's from up north."

"So he's from Scotland?"

"No... lower down than Scotland. He doesn't have a Scottish accent."

I noticed a gleam in her eyes. The gleam was uncommon but always meant the same thing. A crush.

"Wait, are you crushing? You don't normally take that much interest in a boy."

Jen blushed. "Am I really that easy to read?"

"Like a book." I retorted.

"Oh, here he comes now," she whispered. And there he was, self-consciously walking down the hallway. I had to admit, he was cute. Short black hair and a devilish smile were a combination to thrill anyone. But for me, boys and all they entailed were off the table. I wasn't allowed to date, and to be honest, I didn't really want to either. Dating just meant someone else in your life who would eventually let you down.
