2. Darkness

It seemed like forever before the car finally stopped. Emily’s heart started beating faster. What would happen now? She didn’t get more time to think about that before she heard the baggage door being opened. Then she felt someone grabbing her around her waist and lifting her out of the car. Emily didn’t know why she even tried, she knew it didn’t help, but she was wriggling around like a worm trying to get out of their grasp. “What’s the point of trying, the only thing you’ll get out of this is that we’ll lose our grip on you and you’ll fall.” One of them said. Emily didn’t know who it was, cause se couldn’t see anything, but she listened on whoever it was and gave up the fighting. She didn’t want to get hurt.

After about two minutes of being carried around, she finally got putted down on what felt like a bed. Then they took away the blindfold, but she still couldn’t see anything. She tried looking around, and figured out that she was in a dark room, without lights. The only light she could see was light coming through the crack around a door. Suddenly a hand touched her cheek. Emily jerked backwards in surprise. But the hand came back again, and then she heard a voice close to her. “okay, this is going to hurt a bit, but you are not allowed to scream. Okay?” Emily didn’t understand anything. What was he going to do, hit her?  Then the hand grabbed on to the tape over her mouth and she understood it. “ Don’t scream” The voice repeated before he pulled the tape off.

Emily gasped and barely managed to hold the scream inside. Silent tears fell down her cheek. “Good girl” The voice said and started rubbing her cheek. Emily felt the anger build up inside her, and without thinking she bit him. “Fu*k, she bit me!” The voice said pulling his hand away from her. “Well then. We will leave you tied up. You have yourself to thank” The voice said, before she heard footsteps and then a door got opened and light filled the room. She saw four people, probably the same as earlier, walking out of the door. Then one of them came back again, standing in the doorway. “I’m sorry we had to do it like this. But you’ll learn to cooperate after a while. Goodnight, love.” Then the door got closed and everything was dark again.

Emily tried looking around, but she couldn’t see a thing. She tried to remain calm for a while, but the darkness drove her insane. After a while the panic hit her and she started screaming. Screaming out for help. Screaming out for her mother. Screaming out for God. But nobody heard her. Nobody knew where she was.  Nobody could help her. Emily started hyperventilating. It was all so overwhelming. She started hitting her head against the wall, trying to make some noise. She thought of the door and managed to crawl her way towards it and started hitting and kicking it.

Hours later she still sat there, leaned up towards the door. The hitting and kicking was replaced with little finger taps on the door and the screaming was replaced with whispering. But she didn’t give up. She was fighting against the crave to fall asleep, but she didn’t dare. She was so afraid of what might happen if they came back while she was sleeping.

Suddenly she heard something. Someone was walking towards the door.  Emily panicked and crawled to on of the corners of the room, trying to make herself as tiny as possible. The door was opened and someone came in with a tray. The person looked around and for a second he looked worried, but then he saw Emily in the corner of the room, and breathed out. He put the tray down and walked towards her.

Emily crept closer in to the corner as if it was safer there. The person walked up to her and sat down beside her. He reached out and tried to touch her overarm. Emily jumped and moved further away from him. She was so scared. “Please don’t hurt me”, she whispered.

“We won’t hurt you as long as you do what we say, darling.” He says it with such a soft, warm tone. Emily doesn’t know why, but his voice was so calming, almost intoxicating.

“I brought you some food”, he said while standing up and walking towards the tray. He picks it up and walk towards her with it. He put it down and sits back down besides her. “If you promise me that you will behave, I will take off the ropes around your wrists.” He says while gently touching her wrists. At first Emily pulls them away from him.  She doesn’t want him to touch her. But her wrists are hurting so bad from the ropes, so she decides to let him take them off. She moves them towards his hands, which she can barely see because of the darkness. “Promise me you will behave”. Emily takes a deep breath and on the exhalation she whispers, “I promise”.

She couldn’t see the bruises, but she certainly felt them. Emily moved her wrists around and it felt like they had been tied up for months. Emily looked down at the tray with food. She could slightly see the plate with a sandwich and a glass of water. A thought popped in to her head; “what if the food was poisoned?” Emily got sick of the thought, but scared too. She had no idea of what they could have putted in the drink, or the food.

“I bet you are hungry. Eat, girl”. The boy said. Emily didn’t know what to doo. She was afraid not to do as he said, but even more afraid to eat the food. She decided not to say anything. She didn’t want to eat the food. “What is it? You have to be hungry, you have been sitting her for five hours” He said a bit irritated. Five hours! Had she been here for that long? Emily could barely believe it. She looked up to the guy. He still wore the hood, so it was impossible to see what he looked like. “Eat!” he commanded her. Emily just turned around, not saying anything. “I know you are hungry, so stop being stubborn. I don’t want to feed you myself, but I will if you don’t start eating!”

“I’m not hungry” Emily whispered shakily.

“What is it you are afraid of, it’s just food! Tell me what it is!” He yelled at her.

Emily started crying. She was so fragile now, and him yelling at her made her so scared. “Poisoned” she managed to say between all the sobbing.

“What? Oh no. The food is not poisoned. I promise you!” He tried to comfort Emily, but she moved away from him. “Here”, he said and grabbed the sandwich and took a bite of it. Then he took the glass of water and drank some from it. “You see it’s not poisoned. You are safe to eat and drink”. Emily stopped crying. Seeing him eating and drinking really did comfort her.

He got up and started walking towards the door. “Why?” Emily almost inaudible whispered.

“Huh?” He stopped at the doorway.

“Why?” Emily said a bit louder.

He sighed. “I’m sorry.” Then he walked out and closed the door. And again Emily was left in total darkness.
